Marriage is not as widespread in Haiti as in other Western countries, given the long-standing creole tradition of 'plasaj,' an informal marital relationship that is common in rural areas but not legally recognized. Yet marriage has greater prestige and is particularly favored by Haiti's wealthier, cosmopolitan urbanites, according to Haitian sociologist Tamas Jean Pierre - not least because it is recognized abroad. Still, in a country where more than half the population lives under the poverty line of $2.41 per day, only the wealthiest of Haitian couples can afford the full shebang of a wedding ceremony, lavish dinner reception, and honeymoon. Most have to get creative. Sometimes multiple couples get married at the same time to save on church fees. They might skip the reception or, in the countryside, offer a simple meal of bread, fried plantains, rice and coffee. Sometimes, the whole village might provide food. Disputes can occur when there is not enough for all those who turn up, or when guests try to take home dishes or drinks. Despite tight purse strings, the showiness of the ceremony is the one element of the Haitian wedding that never lacks. Musician Duckyns St-Eloi, who is known as 'Zikiki' sings to his bride Mirla-Samuelle Pierre as she enters the church with her father Pierre Obas on their wedding day at Eglise de l'Universite Adventiste d'Haiti, a church in Diquini, Carrefour, Haiti, December 28, 2017. Pierre and Zikiki wed in church, mainly to please Pierre's parents. But the theme of the wedding decoration was 'rastafari,' reflecting the culture of the dreadlocked groom. Like all but the wealthiest Haitians, they chose not to spend any money on a grand reception or honeymoon. "Instead, that same evening we went out to a nightclub," said Zikiki, "and we had a lot of fun together." REUTERS/Valerie Baeriswyl SEARCH "HAITIAN WEDDINGS BAERISWYL" FOR THIS STORY. Vinod Hindocha, father of murdered Anni Dewani, leaves a court with family members in Cape Town December 8, 2014. The South African court cleared Shrien Dewani on Monday of charges that he paid hitmen to kill his wife while they were on honeymoon in Cape Town four years ago. State prosecutors had argued that Dewani paid 15,000 rand ($1,300) in a plot with taxi driver Zola Tongo and others to kidnap and murder his wife, Anni, in November 2010, charges he has consistently denied.

A vendor selling pictures of Indonesian President Joko Widodo waits for customers at his stand in East Jakarta November 26, 2014. From flying economy class to making surprise visits to street markets and poor neighbourhoods, the leadership style of new Indonesian President Widodo is proving very different to his predecessors, who were often seen as stiff and aloof. His mantra of "getting down to work" could also be what is needed to tackle bureaucratic inertia and endemic corruption in Southeast Asia's biggest economy, although some experts believe the 53-year-old former furniture businessman is still enjoying a honeymoon after only five weeks in office. Liu, whose husband Lu was onboard Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 which disappeared on March 8, 2014, shows her husband's picture on his laptop during an interview with Reuters in Beijing July 18, 2014, shows her husband's picture on his laptop as she sits on a bed they shared together at her home. They got married on March 1st, a week before the incident and could not go on a honeymoon due to her husband's busy schedule which was also the reason he had boarded the vanished plane. Six months after Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, with 239 mostly Chinese people on board, disappeared about an hour into a routine journey from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing March 8, loved ones of missing passengers derive what comfort they can from what's left behind after the world's greatest aviation mystery. More than two dozen countries have been involved in the air, sea and underwater search for the Boeing 777 but months of sorties failed to turn up any trace - even after narrowing the search area to the southern Indian Ocean - long after batteries on the black box voice and data recorders had gone flat.
