The Wider Image: Thailand's rebel female Buddhist monks defy tradition
A growing number of women defy generations of Thai Buddhist tradition by becoming ordained as novice monks at the unrecognised all-female Songdhammakalyani monastery outside Bangkok. Officially, only men can become monks and novices in Thailand under a Buddhist order that, since 1928, has forbidden the ordination of women. The country does not recognize female monks or novices. One option for devout Thai women is to become white-clad Buddhist nuns, who follow a less-strict religious regimen than monks and are often relegated to housekeeping tasks in temples. In recent years, more Thai Buddhist women seeking to become full-fledged "bhikkunis," or female monks, have been defying the tradition by pursuing the other option: getting ordained overseas, usually in Sri Lanka or India. Housekeeper Martina Reichmanova poses for a photograph in one of the bedrooms at the Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire, Scotland, August 19, 2014. The Ryder Cup will be played in Scotland for only the second time when the Gleneagles resort marks its 90th anniversary by hosting the eagerly awaited biennial event from September 26-28. Gleneagles was named the best golf resort in the world for the third year running at the 2014 ULTRA awards and follows Muirfield in 1973 as the only Scottish venues since the tournament began in 1927. Europe goes into the event as odds-on favourites, having won five of the last six contests and having not lost on home soil since 1993. The United States, captained by Tom Watson, are without Tiger Woods and are still stinging from the "Miracle of Medinah" when Europe came from 10-4 down to claim a remarkable 14-1/2 -13-1/2 triumph with the greatest singles performance by an away team in Ryder Cup history. Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade (L) leaves the Maharashtra Sadan state guesthouse with an unidentified man after her meeting with India's Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid (not pictured), in New Delhi January 11, 2014. The U.S. said on Friday it would withdraw one of its diplomats from New Delhi at India's request after Washington effectively expelled Khobragade, the Indian envoy at the centre of a dispute between the allies. Khobragade, 39, who was India's deputy consul-general in New York, was arrested in December on charges of visa fraud and lying to U.S. authorities about what she paid her housekeeper. Khobragade's arrest and subsequent strip-search enraged New Delhi, led to protests and dealt a serious blow to U.S. efforts to strengthen ties with India. Devyani, whose arrest and strip-search caused a major rift in U.S.-Indian ties, was effectively expelled from the United States on Thursday as part of a deal in which she was granted diplomatic immunity from charges of visa fraud and lying about underpaying her nanny. Devyani, who was deputy consul-general in New York, was arrested on December 12 and indicted on Thursday by a grand jury for visa fraud and making false statements about how much she paid her housekeeper.
