Cars drive past the Ruacana Cinema in Huambo, Angola's second city, 600 km (373 miles) southeast of Luanda August 18, 2012. A four-lane avenue separates the shelled ruins of the art deco Ruacana Cinema from Huambo's shiny new Chinese-built railway station, a symbol of the leaps Angola has made to recover from a devastating 27-year civil war that ended a decade ago. As Angolans prepare to go to the polls on Friday for only the second time since the end of the war, President Jose Eduardo dos Santos's ruling MPLA party reminds them daily of the rewards of peace and boasts of its reconstruction achievements. A young girl visits her mother, a tuberculosis patient, at the Sanatora Do Huambo hospital in the southern Angolan city of Huambo July 2, 2006. Angola is embarking on a massive campaign to protect more than 3.5 million children under the age of five from measles, polio and malaria. The effort, announced in Luanda by representatives of the World Health Organisation, U.N. children's agency UNICEF and Angola's health ministry, aims to cut Angola's infant mortality rate in half by 2008. Children await treatment in a hospital in the central Angolan city of Huambo September 12, 2005. The United Nations says half of Angola's children are malnourished and in some areas more than 50 percent have been permently stunted due to lack of food. Food and agricultural production is recovering from the effects of a 27 year civil war but aid workers say lack of good roads or railways means there is little incentive for subsistence farmers to shift into cash crops they will be unable to get to market. GUEST SHOWS HIS DISAPPOINTMENT AS MIDNIGHT GUN CANNOT BE FIRED ON TIME IN HONG KONG
Nicholas Poole, ship broker and guest from British company Jardines, shows his disappointment moments after the company's midnight gun cannot be fired as the clock strikes midnight January 1. The gun was fired four minutes later after the stuck shell was reloaded. As a symbol of post-colonial celebrations, the gun has been used to welcome in the New Year at midnight since 1946 and this was the first time it got stuck. Hong Kong celebrates its first new year under the Chinese rule.
