Horse Racing: Barbaros Preakness Recovery
Sept 15, 2006; Kennett Square, PA, U.S.A; Signs for 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro adorn the front gate of the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, PA, where the horse continues to recover from a broken right hind leg suffered in the Preakness on May 20, 2006. Barbaro is also recovering from severe laminitis in his left hind leg, a life threatening condition that developed following surgery to repair the broken right hind leg. The "grow hoof grow" sign refers to Barbaro's laminitis. Surgeon Dean Richardson had to remove a large portion of Barbaro's hoof wall on his left hind leg and, like a human nail, it has to grow back.
