The leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), Nigel Farage, has an earpiece fitted before a television interview in central London August 28, 2014. British Prime Minister David Cameron suffered a setback on Thursday when a lawmaker from his ruling Conservative party unexpectedly resigned and defected to the anti-EU UKIP party which has no seats in the British parliament. Douglas Carswell, a prominent Eurosceptic, said his position in Cameron's party had become untenable and that he didn't believe it was serious about "real change". Britain's Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg is seen on a television screen as patrons socialise in the Kay Park Tavern, a pub near the main business district in Kilmarnock, Scotland March 26, 2014. The Scottish capital, Edinburgh, has an air of prosperity that explains why so many of its residents are happy with their lot and unwilling to risk the changes independence may bring. But in Kilmarnock it is a different story. The once proud industrial town has been named the worst place to live in Scotland, battling high unemployment and with pawnbrokers and discount stores dominating its shopping centre. The contrast between the two is startling and highlights the wide social divide among Scots ahead of a September 18 referendum when Scottish residents will decide whether to leave the United Kingdom after over 300 years to become an independent country. A woman puts money in a jukebox as a man sits below a television in a bar in the town of Lerwick on the Shetland Islands April 2, 2014. Twelve hours by ferry from the Scottish mainland, hundreds of miles from Edinburgh and closer to Oslo than London, the windswept Shetland islands have their own aspirations about Scottish independence. Some of the 23,000 inhabitants even want their own. Many Shetlanders see the Sept. 18 vote on whether Scotland should end the 307-year-old union with England as an opportunity to gain control over local services and a share of revenues from the oil pumped from the North Sea.
