Felix Garcia, 60, who is retired from the military and disabled with epilepsy, and his wife Daisy Morales, 59, stand on the front porch of their home in Isabela de Sagua, Cuba, January 28, 2023. Garcia and his wife live off 1,500 pesos a month, approximately 12.50 USD at the official exchange rate. He told Reuters he had not been able to find medicine for his illness in months. He thinks it unlikely he will join the U.S. "parole" program announced in early January that allows 30,000 migrants from Cuba, as well as other countries, to enter the United States monthly provided they apply online, find a financial sponsor and pay airfare. "The parole program works if you have someone to sponsor you. But me? I have no one," he said. "I will probably die here." Jani became an accredited social health activist (ASHA) community health worker, a lynchpin of India's rural healthcare system, around seven years ago. She helps to monitor pregnant women in her village of 500 people, and helps with malaria tests and doles out basic medication for fever and diarrhoea. The main breadwinner for her family of five, Jani draws a monthly salary of 3,000 rupees ($41), helping put her two daughters and one son through school. When she first learned she was to be vaccinated, Jani said she wasn't worried. Then she heard a rumour. Reena Jani, 34, a health worker, cooks a meal before travelling to Mathalput Community Health Centre to receive the vaccine developed by Oxford/AstraZeneca, during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, at her home in Pendajam village in Koraput, India, January 16, 2021. Jani became an accredited social health activist (ASHA) community health worker, a lynchpin of India's rural healthcare system, around seven years ago.
