Pictures of the Year: A Picture and its Story
A riot police officer pepper sprays an anti-government protester during a demonstration at Causeway Bay district in Hong Kong, China, September 29, 2019. Reuters Photographer Tyrone Siu: "In this picture, an elderly man was pepper sprayed in the face by riot police in Hong Kong. This man was different from the usual protestors Ð especially the more radical ones at the frontline of the conflict who were usually young, black-clad and wearing protective gear. This man was among the locals from the neighbourhood who came to complain about the heavy police presence in Causeway Bay, one of the busiest shopping and residential districts in the city. The officers were there to disperse crowds who joined an unauthorised anti-government rally during a series of ongoing protests triggered by an extradition bill amendment. The residents shouted insults at the police and accused them of endangering the area, while the riot police, who appeared to lose patience, responded by spraying one of the men in the face. What surprised me was how fearless the unarmed residents were when faced with a full army of police officers equipped with lethal weapons. Even after the man was sprayed, the others were undeterred, if not more enraged and stayed on to express their anger." REUTERS/Tyrone Siu/File Photo SEARCH "POY STORIES 2019" FOR THIS STORY. Less than 24 hours after Donald Trump took office, his presidency started generating controversy. Photographs showing that the crowd at Trump's swearing-in was smaller than at Barack Obama's first presidential inauguration in 2009 caused the first ruckus in his administration - but not the last. Trump's first year in office was coloured by an investigation into whether his campaign colluded with the Russian government to affect the election outcome, insults and threats of war with North Korea, and an effort to pass business-friendly legislation. The Wider Image: Transgender boxer fights for acceptance
Clad in a pink tank top and shorts, her face made up with rouge and red lipstick, transgender Muay Thai fighter Nong Rose Baan Charoensuk is a formidable opponent. Karun "Priewpak" Kaemlam, a male fighter, lost a thrilling five-round match to Rose, as she is generally known, earlier this month. "I wasn't able to fight her strength and big build," said Priewpak who suffered a gash above his right eye in the fight at Rajadamnern Stadium in the Thai capital. It was the second consecutive win for Rose in the revered Muay Thai arena after becoming the first transgender boxer to fight there last month. "Being a transgender doesn't mean that we're weak," Rose said after the fight. Born Somros Polchareon, Rose said she identified as a woman at an early age and began wearing makeup and a sports bra in the ring. In the rural towns where she has done most of her fighting, her appearance disconcerted some of her male opponents. "They would say they didn't want to fight with a gay person, as it would be embarrassing if they won or lost," she said. "I still face those insults, but I don't care about them." Thailand is widely seen as a paradise for gay and transgender people, but many say they are treated as second-class citizens. Transgender women figure on television, in beauty pageants and at hair salons and cosmetics counters, but they cannot change their gender designation on identity papers, despite a 2015 law against gender-based discrimination. It is an insult to say I am Chinese." Wilson said. REUTERS/Tyrone Siu
