Laid-off Walmart employees and supporters hold a news conference outside the Pico Rivera Walmart Store, which was recently closed on very short notice, in Los Angeles, California, April 20, 2015. The former employees dispute the claim they say was given by Walmart that the store was closed because of plumbing problems, and want to be given jobs in other stores. A union on Monday asked the National Labor Relations Board to force Wal-Mart to reinstate employees at five stores, accusing the retailer of closing the locations to retaliate against workers for attempts to organize for better pay and benefits. Wal-Mart Stores, which announced last week that it was temporarily closing five stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Florida and California to fix plumbing issues, denied the union's claims. It said it would work to reopen the stores, which employed about 2,200 people, as quickly as possible. REUTERS/David McNew

An instructor looks at monitors as he oversees training, conducted with crane simulator, at a maritime transport training centre, which offers classes as part of a government-sponsored programme to train unemployed people in industrial professions, in Alexandria April 30, 2014. Putting to use a manufacturing portfolio that stretches from pasta and refrigerators to tablet computers, the Egyptian military announced to great fanfare in April that it was offering vocational training to jobseekers in a new joint venture with the civilian government. It was part of a push to tackle joblessness, and evidence of a more prominent role for the army's economic muscle, with its former chief, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the runaway favourite to become president in May 26-7 elections. Jobseekers with signs mentioning their skills wait for employers at a market street in a Hutong, Chinese for "small alley", in Beijing March 7, 2014. It is all right for China to slightly miss the government's 7.5 percent economic growth target this year as long as enough jobs are created, the finance minister said on Thursday, stressing that a healthy labour market is more important. Lou Jiwei told a briefing at China's annual parliament meeting that the government has three broad economic policy goals each year: create jobs, control inflation and boost the economy.
