The Wider Image: Capturing 24 hours in Gaza, one hour at a time
In the build-up to the one-year anniversary of the Gaza border protests that opened up a deadly new front in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Reuters photographer Dylan Martinez visited Gaza for the first time. As someone who had never set eyes on Gaza, his assignment was to use those unfamiliar eyes to record life beyond the daily drumbeat of violence in the blockaded Palestinian territory. The mood has become more tense in recent weeks as the March 30 anniversary nears, with trails of Palestinian rockets and Israeli missiles again appearing in the skies above. Martinez did not know what to expect after he crossed through Israel's fortified checkpoint and past a long caged walkway and parallel road leading to a dilapidated Palestinian checkpoint at the other end. "We have a great team of photographers and journalists in Gaza whose main task, really, is to photograph the protest, the clashes between Israel and Gaza," said Martinez, 49, a 28-year Reuters veteran who has covered Europe, Asia and the Americas and is currently based in London. "My remit, I think, was to do pretty much anything but that. Because everyone has seen that side of Gaza." REUTERS/Dylan Martinez SEARCH "MARTINEZ GAZA" FOR THIS STORY. Yannis Behrakis, award-winning Reuters photographer, dies aged 58
Yannis Behrakis, one of Reuters' most decorated and best-loved photographers, has passed away after a long battle with cancer. He was 58. Since joining the news wire 30 years ago, Behrakis covered many of the most tumultuous events around the world, including conflicts in Afghanistan and Chechnya, the earthquake in Kashmir and the Egyptian uprising of 2011. In the process, he won the respect of both peers and rivals for his skill and bravery. He also led a team to a Pulitzer Prize in 2016 for coverage of the refugee crisis. Colleagues who worked with him in the field said Reuters had lost a talented and committed journalist. REUTERS/Yannis Behrakis/File photo SEARCH "YANNIS BEHRAKIS" FOR THIS STORY. Asmara, Eritrea
A Picture and its Story: After 18 years, Ethiopian man finds his family in Eritrea
When Ethiopia and Eritrea went to war in 1998 and deported each other's nationals en masse, Addisalem Hadgu thought he had nothing to worry about, safe in the belief his Ethiopian passport would shield his Eritrean wife from expulsion. Two years later, as the conflict raged on in trenches along the common border, his wife, Nitslal Abraha, mysteriously disappeared along with their two daughters. Addisalem, an Ethiopian state TV journalist, embarked on a frantic search. A neighbour approached him several days later and handed him a letter from Nitslal in which she said she had left for Eritrea with Azmera and Danayt, who were teenagers at the time. The letter did not explain her reasons but Addisalem suspected that she, like millions of others on both sides of the conflict, had been swept by the patriotism and nationalism that engulfed both countries as bloodshed escalated. "One day, we may meet," the letter read. For 18 years, they didn't. There was no way to communicate - all transport links, phone and postal services had been severed since the start of conflict. But this month, a reunion became possible when the two governments - bitter foes for nearly two decades despite agreeing a ceasefire back in 2000 - signed a peace deal that ended a generation of hostility in a matter of days. The Wider Image: Journey to Antarctica: seals, penguins and glacial beauty
Greenpeace brought Reuters photo and television journalists along for a segment of the voyage, bringing them on the Arctic Sunrise from Chile through the rough waters of the Drake Passage, to the Antarctic Peninsula Ð which was brimming with wildlife. Photographer Alexandre Meneghini: "The trip began in Punta Arenas, the capital of Magallanes region, Chile. We had spent three days aboard the Arctic Sunrise, a Greenpeace ship docked in one of the city's harbours, to test our equipment and conduct security drills. I was eager to get to Antarctica. Greenpeace, the global environmental group, organised the journey to raise awareness of, and support for, a European Union proposal to create the biggest protected area on Earth in Antarctica. The plan was to create a safe haven for marine life there from industrial fishing. The strategy involved documenting the effects of climate change, pollution and fishing on native wildlife. Pictures and video footage, specimen samples from the Antarctic seafloor, and surface water sampling for microplastics were all collected by Greenpeace to help build the case for the sanctuary." Havana, Cuba
The Wider Image: For Cubans, Wi-Fi means family
At dusk, when the worst of the Caribbean heat has subsided, parks around Cuba fill with families video chatting with loved ones abroad or scrolling through social media, their animated faces lit by telephone and tablet screens. The introduction of Wi-Fi hotspots in Cuban public spaces two years ago has transformed the Communist-run island that had been mostly offline. Nearly half the population of 11 million connected at least once last year. That has whet Cubans' appetite for better and cheaper access to the internet. Given the relative expense of connecting to the internet, Cubans use it mostly to stay in touch with relatives and friends. Although prices have dropped, the $1.50 hourly tariff represents 5 percent of the average monthly state salary of $30. A tiny share of homes has had broadband access until now, subject to government permission granted to some professionals such as academics and journalists. The state telecoms monopoly has vowed to hook up the whole island and connected several hundred Havana homes late last year as a pilot project. In September, it said it would roll that service out nationwide by the end of 2017. Cubans who can afford it flock to Internet cafes and 432 outdoor hotspots where they brave ants, mosquitoes and the elements. REUTERS/Alexandre Meneghini SEARCH "MENEGHINI INTERNET" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: Short on supplies, South Sudan rebels fight on
Before the South Sudanese rebels attacked the town of Kaya, they handed out supplies - a ragged strip of red cloth to identify themselves to each other as friendly forces, a packet of biscuits, and two precious magazines of ammunition per fighter. But government forces counter-attacked, killing several rebels and an American journalist. The rebels ran out of ammunition after 40 minutes and had to retreat back to their base in the bush. "We lack funds and support. The guns we have, the ammunition we have, we take from the enemy," General Matata Frank Elikana, the rebel governor for Yei River State, said during the long march through rain-soaked elephant grass to the front line.
