LKAB mine workers use closed circuit monitors and remote control joysticks to operate mining equipment, in this photo taken in Kiruna December 27, 2006. More than half of the town will be relocated in the coming years due to its place atop the world's largest underground mine. Kiruna, Sweden's northernmost municipality, is under threat as cracks caused by decades of iron ore mining slowly erode its foundations. Picture taken December 27, 2006. A THAI UNIVERSITY STUDENT AIMS A PISTOL VIA REMOTE CONTROL IN BANGKOK.
Thai University student Watchara Daramart, 23, uses a video game joystick and a personal computer to aim a fake pistol at his colleague Nares Paotongkum (L) using a camera and laser pointer fixed to the weapon in Bangkok August 16, 2000. The "Intelligent Roboguard" was designed by the University students using off-the-shelf miniature motors and other cheap technology to illustrate how the internet may be used in the future to remotely monitor people's homes and assest, with the added benefit of being able to fire a weapon to guard against theft or intrusion. The technology could also be harnessed for use in military applications.
