The Wider Image: Summit brings hope to Japan's pro-North ethnic Koreans
Ethnic Koreans in Japan loyal to Pyongyang hope next week's historic U.S.-North Korea summit will help bring reconciliation on the Korean peninsula and clarify their own murky legal status. Their optimism has built following April's upbeat summit of the leaders of North and South Korea and ahead of next Tuesday's meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore. "I thought reunification was something in the distant future, especially with all the sanctions" on the North, said 17-year-old Paeng Yu Na, who attends one of about 60 schools across Japan affiliated with the North. "But it now feels so much closer," said Paeng, who wears traditional Korean dress along with her classmates, although not beyond school walls to avoid attacks from right-wing nationalists. Combination photo shows officials speaking to players from China and South Korea (top), and players from South Korea and Indonesia during their women's doubles group stage badminton matches during the London 2012 Olympic Games at the Wembley Arena in this July 31, 2012 file photo. Eight women badminton players were on August 1, 2012 disqualified by the sport's federation from the Olympic competition, but have not been expelled from the London Games, the International Olympic Committee said. The players (top from left: South Korea's Kim Ha-na, Jung Kyung-eun, China's Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli; Indonesia's Greysia Polii (bottom L) and Meiliana Jauhari (bottom R) and South Korea's Ha Jung-eun and Kim Min-jung (bottom section, top L) , had been charged with deliberately losing group stage contests to secure an easier draw through the Olympic tournament. Tournament referee Torsten Berg (2nd L) speaks to players from China and South Korea during their women's doubles group play stage Group A badminton match during the London 2012 Olympic Games at the Wembley Arena July 31, 2012. Tournament officials are investigating a women's badminton doubles match between China and South Korea at the London Games on Tuesday after both teams appeared determined to lose. Spectator displeasure and referee intervention did nothing to encourage the Chinese pair of Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli and South Korean duo Jung Kyung-eun and Kim Ha-na to raise their game, a dead rubber at the Wembley Arena. Both teams, who have already qualified for the quarter-finals, delivered an abject performance that saw all four players miss routine shots throughout.
