Dasa Sil Matha Kelaniya Silavathi sweeps the floor in her temple in Colombo
Dasa Sil Matha Kelaniya Silavathi, 90 years old, a female-lay follower of Buddhism sweeps the floor in her temple in Colombo March 7, 2014. Silvathi got married when she was 16 years old and has 9 children, according to her daughter. After her husband's death when she was 50 years old, she decided to leave behind her lay life and become a dasa sil matha. Silavathi said that although she can no longer hear well, she is still able to go about her daily activities on her own. On March 8 activists around the globe celebrate International Women's Day, which dates back to the beginning of the 20th Century and has been observed by the United Nations since 1975.
