Ayurveda is an ancient Hindu system of holistic healing. The massage is taught to the prisoners to help them understand the human body and engender a greater sense of compassion for others, according ACUDA. Down a dirt road in the Amazonian state of Rondonia, prisoners convicted of murder, theft and other crimes get a rare release from the day-to-day hardships of a penal system known for violence and overcrowding. ACUDA (Association for the Cultural Development of Prisoners), a local charity in the capital city of Porto Velho, trains detainees in spiritual and physical healing practices such as Ayurvedic massage as well as in vocational skills including car mechanics and gardening. An employee displays a placard advertising massage prices in a tourist district of Khao San Road in Bangkok May 27, 2014. The Thai army's imposition of martial law is another blow to the country's tourist industry, adding to the economic pain from six months of destabilising street protests as airlines cut back on flights and concern over insurance adds to travellers' worries. Tourism makes up about 10 percent of Thailand's economy and the ebbing number of visitors contributed to a fall in gross domestic product in the first three months of the year, adding to fears the country is sliding into recession. A demonstrator gets a massage as people walk past at Madrid's Puerta del Sol May 25, 2011, three days after Spanish regional and local elections. Tens of thousands of protesters have joined daily those camped out for the past eleven days to protest against the government's handling of an economic crisis which broke out in 2008. Spain's ruling Socialists reeled on Monday from stinging losses in local elections, and now face a balancing act between voter anger over sky-high unemployment and investor demands for strict austerity measures.
