The Wider Image: Sao Paulo mayor declares war on wall writers
The angular, runic font has conquered swaths of Sao Paulo's landscape as unseen street artists scale buildings and landmarks with paint rollers and spray cans in hand, drawing the ire of many who embrace other forms of graffiti. "A muralist is an artist and has our respect," Mayor Joao Doria said in an interview this month, highlighting his plans to commission new works of street art. "Pichacao is aggression … It is not a social problem. It is mental, criminal." Doria says police have caught more than 100 people writing on walls illegally in Sao Paulo since he took office in January. He has established a fine for pichacao of up to 10,000 reais ($3,200), or 10 times Brazil's monthly minimum wage. But practitioners, known as 'pichadores', say that will do little to dissuade them from climbing high-rises and highway overpasses to leave their mark. "What other artist puts their safety at risk for what they do?" said the pichador known as Du. "All art involves freedom of expression, but pichacao is the expression of freedom. You're telling the world, 'Here I am. You can't ignore me.'" Most pichadores write little more than their street name or the name of their crew, and spare social commentary in rare instances. "Who is Doria?" one scrawled in a tag. REUTERS/Nacho Doce SEARCH "PICHADORES" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY.

LARUNG, China
A Picture and its Story: Tibetan pilgrims: prayers, chants and utmost bliss
Tibetan prayer flags flutter above the Larung valley and its Larung Wuming Buddhist Institute, located some 3700 to 4000 metres above the sea level in remote Sertar county, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan province, China October 30, 2015. Reuters Photographer Damir Sagolj: "The view from among Larung Wuming monastery is breathtaking. Colourful Tibetan prayer flags flutter, clouds scud across dark blue sky; in the valley, miniature people go about their business. The occasion: the Utmost Bliss Dharma Assembly, to mark Buddha's descent from Tushita Heaven. Tens of thousands of believers join monks and nuns in daily chanting and praying. The main gathering point is a Buddhist laymen lodge. Even before the sun comes out people start arriving, sitting on the frozen ground and praying in sub-zero temperatures. Tibetans' traditional clothes - funky hats and jackets with endless sleeves - seem to keep out the cold much better than my fancy all-weather gear. Thankfully, I get some of the hot yak-butter tea distributed to believers shivering under blankets. Then the sun comes out behind the hill, hitting straight into my cameras. Pictures are painted in gold and I play with flares in my lenses, a rare pleasure. I enjoy every second. Chanting, praying and listening to monks' teaching lasts eight days, from sunrise to sunset. We climb another hill to see sky burials: bodies of deceased ethnic Tibetans offered to vultures. On the top of yet another hill we visit monasteries and simple monks' homes to see how they live. We eat vegetarian food and drink more yak-butter tea, almost forgetting about the 15-hour return drive. Somehow the bends in the road don't seem as tortuous nor the trip so endless. Perhaps that's what a pilgrimage does for you." Picture taken October 30, 2015. REUTERS/Damir Sagolj TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY

A painted turtle sits on a log at Tommy Thompson Park located on a man-made peninsula known as the Leslie Street Spit, in Toronto June 24, 2015. It was created over 60 years ago by the dumping of dredged sand, concrete chunks and earth fill, expanding what was once just a thin strip of land in the city's busy harbor. An unexpected urban oasis, the development brings marshes, lagoons and forests to the centre of Canada's largest city. RNPS - PICTURES OF THE YEAR 2014 - PHOTOGRAPHERS' STORY
An aerial view of the Atibainha dam, part of the Cantareira reservoir, during a drought in Nazare Paulista, Sao Paulo state in this November 18, 2014 file picture.

Words can't express what it feels like to view a landscape as bleak and disturbing as the one in this photo.

In the four years I've lived in Brazil I've seen many extraordinary and terrifying things, but the current drought surrounding Sao Paulo for the past nine months surpasses all. Without rain, the reservoirs that provide South America's largest city with water are at their lowest level in decades.
The World Cup and recent elections managed to distract the attention of the population away from the looming problem. They also seem to have kept the state's institutions busy with little attention paid to this pending disaster.

As I rode in the helicopter to take this and other aerial photos, it was only after landing and opening the image on a computer that I noticed the real message that of a woman in panic as in Edvard Munch's painting "The Scream." For me, this is Mother Nature screaming for help.

A reporter takes a picture of the "Adoration of the Magi", a massive painting that Leonardo da Vinci started in 1481 at the age of 29 but abandoned a year later, leaving it in various stages of conception and development, as it is unveiled in Florence September 23, 2014. The painting on wood, measuring about 2.5 by 2.5 meters (8.2 by 8.2 feet) depicts the three wise men who paid tribute to the infant Jesus in Bethlehem, but it also includes a riot of human figures, battling horses, architectural designs, landscapes and skies. Done on 10 slabs of wood glued together, it has blank areas, areas with under-drawings, and sections in advanced stages. The current restoration project has revealed many previously hidden details, facial expressions and subtleties of light and shadow. After the wood backing of the painting is restored, it is due to return to a special room in the Uffizi, where it will be on display with two other Leonardo works. A decorated bomb shelter stands in a playground at a school built from reinforced concrete in the Israeli town of Sderot April 7, 2014. More than 8,600 rockets fired from Gaza have landed in and around the Israeli city of Sderot since 2001, according to the local media center. With a population of around 25,000, the city lies just over a kilometre away from Gaza and is not fully protected by the Israeli Iron Dome defence system set up to intercept incoming missiles. When they hear a "code red" alarm warning of an approaching rocket, Sderot's residents have 15 seconds to seek shelter. In an effort to brighten the landscape and ease the psychological stress, especially among children, many bomb shelters and concrete reinforcements are decorated with bright primary colours, graffiti, and idyllic landscapes at odds with the monolithic architecture of the town and the imminent threat of attack.
