A ROMANIAN PREPARES HIS FISHING ROW AS UNEP MEMBER TAKES WATER SAMPLES.
A Romanian prepares his fishing tackle as U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP) Czech Republic member Jiri Kokes takes biological samples February 27 from the Lapus river bed, upstream of the containment dam of Aurul SA gold smelter in Baia Mare, northern Romania. Twenty-five international U.N. experts started a two-week tour of Romania and nearby states to assess damage from a cyanide spill from the Aurul SA that killed thousands of fish along rivers Somes, Tisa and Danube. The upstream samples will be compared with downstream samples to could establish the level of contamination in the river.
