Palestinians, who fled their houses during an Israeli offensive, lie inside a classroom at a United Nations-run school sheltering displaced Palestinians, in Gaza City August 2, 2014. In Israeli southern communities hit by daily rocket and mortar bomb attacks from the Gaza Strip, some residents remained in their shelters, waiting tensely to see if a 72-hour Egyptian-brokered ceasefire that went into effect on Tuesday would hold. Anti-eviction activists keep Karim Lopez Buitrago, 5, entertained as they lie on his bed while waiting for the judicial commission to carry out his eviction in Madrid February 3, 2014. Lopez Buitrago's mother moved with her son to the home her friend Maria Jose Alonso Serrano was renting in Madrid last June. Alonso Serrano, who's been out of a job for almost two years after being diagnosed with breast cancer, stopped making her rent payments last July. She receives 375 euros per month from the state, but that is not enough to pay for rent and food. Alonso Serrano shares the apartment with Lopez Buitrago, her son, and friend Silvia Asensio Duque. They are also unemployed and have no other housing alternatives. The eviction was finally suspended with the help of members of the Mortgage Victim's Platform (PAH). Ryan Rice speaks to his father Joe as they wait for the start of a make-shift drive-in movie theater in Gary, Indiana, September 6, 2013. Struggling U.S. Rust Belt cities for years have tried to counter the loss of manufacturing jobs with big, expensive projects including casinos and stadiums. Now, Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson is going small with strategic, narrowly focused ideas such as selling vacant homes for $1, demolishing derelict buildings and basic neighborhood clean-up projects that produce immediate results.
