High school senior Megan Bickford, 17, dances at her prom in Harrison, Maine, U.S., May 15, 2021. Prom was held outdoors under tents, with students wearing masks. Bickford, who was raised in a liberal family, said she grew increasingly alarmed when she saw Confederate flags pop up on porches or vehicles northwest of Portland, where she and her family live. "I feel like if we had a more normal four years I probably wouldn't be as loud," she said. "I'm growing up in that political climate where it seems like if you don't scream, the other side won't hear you." REUTERS/Brian Snyder SEARCH "CLASS OF 2021" FOR THIS STORY. A Picture and its Story: Protests, rallies and two impeachments: Trump's presidency in photographs
U.S. President Donald Trump welcomes 11-years-old Frank Giaccio as he cuts the Rose Garden grass at the White House in Washington, U.S., September 15, 2017. Carlos Barria: "Once in a while I have the chance to witness a natural, unscripted moment. During a typical morning in September, I got the announcement that the White House Pool would gather by the door of the Rose Garden for a photo opportunity. As it happened, President Donald Trump was planning to surprise 11-year-old Frank Giaccio - a youngster who wrote a letter to Trump offering to mow the White House lawn. Giaccio had then been invited to work for a day at the White House alongside National Park Service staff. As we waited for Trump to show up I saw that Giaccio was very focused on this job trying to cut the grass in straight lines, and not paying much attention to the group of journalists, photographers and cameramen milling around the garden. Suddenly, from the other side of a hedge, wearing his signature long, red tie, President Trump made his appearance. As Trump approached, he began shouting to the boy above the noise of the lawnmower, but it was too loud and Giaccio was so focused on his job that he never noticed Trump. He walked right past, pushing the machine. Trump paused for a second and walked to the end of the lawn to talk to Giaccio, but again, the boy didn't stop mowing the grass. He kept going until his father rushed onto the scene to grab his attention, and then he finally stopped to greet Trump." REUTERS/Carlos Barria/File Photo SEARCH "PHOTOGRAPHERS TRUMP" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: On trial on riot charges, Hong Kong newlyweds prepared for life apart
For Valentine's Day this year, Henry Tong gave his wife, Elaine To, a photo book. It holds the memories of their life together: their first date six years ago, kissing in front of a pro-democracy "Lennon wall"; the tattooed bands on their ring fingers, symbolizing a bond not easily erased; and their wedding day last year, when he vowed to her, "Not even a nuclear explosion could break us apart." The book doesn't mention the 50 hours that Henry and Elaine spent in jail in July last year, just four days before their wedding. Arrested at a pro-democracy protest, the couple were kept in different cells at the police station, separated by a long corridor and a large wall. Not knowing if they'd get out in time for their wedding, the couple tried to stay together by shouting across the cells. "We couldn?t see each other. But if we yelled loud enough, we could listen to each other's voices," Elaine said. REUTERS/Tyrone Siu SEARCH "HONG KONG NEWLYWEDS" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES.
