A Picture and its Story: Inside the Congo camp haunted by an unknown war
The attackers came into the village at night wielding machetes. Not even two-year-old Rachele-Ngabausi was spared their violence. The last thing her 11-year-old sister Mave Grace saw before falling unconscious was men with machetes cutting open their pregnant motherÕs belly and killing the unborn child. When Grace woke she was surrounded by dead bodies. Her left hand was cut off just above the wrist. ÒAround us we saw corpses everywhere,Ó Mave Grace says. Wearing a green patterned dress, she squints into the sun as she holds up her handless arm, the scabs of the stump still not fully healed. Mave GraceÕs home village of Tchee lies in the eastern Ituri region, where ethnic strife between Hema herders and Lendu farmers has cost untold lives and forced tens of thousands to flee since it started earlier this year. The Wider Image: Charred bodies, wounded soldiers after Congo army victory
Discarded military fatigues, boots, trash, a charred corpse inside a smouldering hut: this is all that remains of a Ugandan rebel base in the wake of what the Congolese army says was an important victory. Democratic Republic of Congo's army launched its latest offensive last month against the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an Islamist insurgency originally based in Uganda that has moved across the border into eastern Congo. Congolese authorities accuse the ADF of carrying out a series of attacks around the town of Beni between 2014 and 2016 that killed more than 800 people, many of them hacked to death with machetes during the night. The rebels are also blamed for an attack on a United Nations base in December that killed 15 peacekeepers and five Congolese soldiers. The Wider Image: Young Rohingya mothers flee persecution
Scared, hungry and beaten badly, Rohingya women fleeing an army crackdown in Myanmar recount harrowing tales of destruction and death: a father burned alive, an uncle slaughtered with a machete, a brother arrested and not heard from again. But huddled in makeshift refugee camps, dependent on food rations and the mercy of fellow refugees, they also carry something else: hope inspired by their newborn children, for whom Bangladesh is now home. The babies' delicate features present a sharp contrast with the squalid conditions of the makeshift refugee camp, where a skipped meal or food poisoning can mean the difference between survival or death. The Myanmar army launched its "clearance operation" after Rohingya insurgents attacked border guard posts in northwestern Rakhine state in October. The United Nations said it had committed mass killings and gang rapes and burned villages in a campaign that may amount to crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing.
