An Indian boy trains on a pole as other students await their turn to practise Mallakhmab" (gymnast's pole), a traditional Indian form of gymnatsics, at a training centre in Bombay September 26, 2004. "Mallakhamb" is a combination of gymnastics and Indian martial arts and can be traced back to the 12th century. For several centuries, the sport lay dormant but is regaining popularity in the country.

Two Indian girls perform the rope variation of a traditional form of Indian
gymnastics, known as "Mallakhamb" (gymnast's pole), in Bombay May 27,2003.
Mallakhamb, which can be traced back to the 12th century in India, combines
aggressive body control and the gentleness of a dancer to attain physical
fitness. However, Mallkhamb is on the decline owing to the commercialisation
