A local resident rests beside a part of the landing gear of a plane which crashed into a residential area in Medan September 6, 2005. Around 100 people are feared dead after an Indonesian Boeing 737-200 crashed into a residential area in the city of Medan on Monday just after takeoff, breaking into pieces and setting fire to homes. The plane, operated by local carrier Mandala Airlines, had a total of 117 people on board, the airline said. Hospital officials in Medan, capital of North Sumatra province, said some of the dead were residents on the ground.

Indonesian women at cigarette maker PT Hanjaya Mandala Sampoerna's factory in Surabaya hand roll clove-scented cigarettes, or kreteks, a unique blend of tobacco, clove and a special sauce. Some 90 percent of Indonesian smokers prefer kreteks, which are inextricably tied to the country's history, culture and identity. While Sampoerna is one of the big kretek manufacturers, there are hundreds of kretek makers across the main Indonesian island of Java. But the stronger nicotine and tar content contained in kreteks is causing concern among health experts. Picture taken on February 28, 2004.
