The Wider Image: Meet the Thai "Drag Race" star marching for democracy and equality
With flawless makeup and costume that blends cabaret with catwalk and rainbow pride with royal court pageantry, Aunchalee Pokinwuttipob symbolises how Thailand's protests are about much more than calls for a change of government. Aunchalee, 26, is a drag queen and reality television show winner who is riding the momentum of youth rallies against the military and royalist establishment, hoping to advance a drawn-out struggle for same-sex marriage and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights. Alongside the broader calls for greater democracy, is anger at government failure to change laws and policies that transgender Thais see as discriminatory. "We really want human rights. We've wanted it for a long time. It's related to freedom of speech and equality," said Aunchalee, better known by the stage name, Angele Anang. "This is a new phenomenon in Thailand, because they didn't have this kind of opportunity to speak up in the past." REUTERS/Chalinee Thirasupa SEARCH "THAILAND LGBT" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: Haiti's brides beat hurricanes, power cuts and protests to wed in style
Marriage is not as widespread in Haiti as in other Western countries, given the long-standing creole tradition of 'plasaj,' an informal marital relationship that is common in rural areas but not legally recognized. Yet marriage has greater prestige and is particularly favored by Haiti's wealthier, cosmopolitan urbanites, according to Haitian sociologist Tamas Jean Pierre - not least because it is recognized abroad. Still, in a country where more than half the population lives under the poverty line of $2.41 per day, only the wealthiest of Haitian couples can afford the full shebang of a wedding ceremony, lavish dinner reception, and honeymoon. Most have to get creative. Sometimes multiple couples get married at the same time to save on church fees. They might skip the reception or, in the countryside, offer a simple meal of bread, fried plantains, rice and coffee. Sometimes, the whole village might provide food. Disputes can occur when there is not enough for all those who turn up, or when guests try to take home dishes or drinks. Despite tight purse strings, the showiness of the ceremony is the one element of the Haitian wedding that never lacks. Patricia, who is pregnant, and Obelson, who got married in a joint ceremony with another pregnant couple who they did not know, to share the costs of the ceremony, pose for a photo outside the church where they got married in Baie de Henne, Nord Ouest Department, Haiti, October 27, 2018. Obelson, who works as a motorcycle driver, met Patricia while working. When she fell pregnant, her parents insisted that they get married. Protestant churchgoing communities in Haiti favour marriage, especially if a couple is expecting a child with some religious schools only accepting pupils if their parents can provide a marriage certificate. Boxes of old greeting cards and stationery items left by the previous occupant of Villa Guardamangia, a former residence of Britain's Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, are stacked on top of each other, in Pieta, Malta, June 23, 2020. The then-Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip were in the first years of their marriage at the time and moved to Malta when Prince Philip was based there in command of a Royal Navy frigate. The Maltese government agency Heritage Malta acquired the Villa Guardamangia for some five million euros and hopes not just to restore the villa to the way it looked several decades ago, but also to turn it into a museum of Malta's history as a British colony until independence in 1964, and the links with the British royal family.
