Workers carry "siris", a sticky material used to make matchsticks and whitewash for buildings containing tannery waste, at Hazaribagh in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka May 1, 2005. There are 149 tanning factories in Hazaribagh, most of them 30 to 35 years old. According to the Department of Environment, the factories discharge 15,000 cubic litres of liquid waste and 19 tons of solid waste every day, posing a health hazard to the environment.
