The Wider Image: Budapest's abandoned Soviet military hospital
Time stands still in a former Soviet military hospital in Budapest that was abandoned when the last Russian troops left Hungary in 1991. Soldiers wounded in Afghanistan were among those treated here. Now the 70,000 square metre complex lies derelict - its walls crumbling, its floors torn up, its windows broken. First opened in 1904 as a private mental institution, the Art Nouveau hospital was occupied by the Red Army as it advanced against the Nazis in 1945. New buildings, including a huge surgery department, were added later. Now they are eerily quiet, with only pigeons flying in and out. Water drips from the ceilings of the operating theatres. The Wider Image: Turkey's referendum: myriad views, only two options
Associate Professor of Pathology and Doctor Sevdegul Aydin Mungan, 40, poses in her laboratory in a university hospital in Trabzon, Turkey, April 5, 2017. She says she will vote 'Yes'. "I am a humanist and a patriot. I had serious problems because of my headscarf while I was a student and then as an academic at the university hospital. I had friends wearing headscarves who left school and had mental problems. I am grateful to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan because under his rule I was aware again that I was human. I had the right to work with clothes that expressed my way of being. Erdogan is in love with his nation. If 'Yes' wins, we will become a more respectful and powerful country. Amid, brother of hunger-striking Palestinian detainee Mohammed Allan, speaks on the phone as his mother, Maazouzeh, sits next to him at Barzilai hospital in the southern city of Ashkelon, Israel, August 19, 2015. Israel set new terms on Wednesday that might hasten the release of the Palestinian who is on a 65-day-old hunger strike against his detention without trial. A Supreme Court ruling on Mohammed Allan's petition to be freed was anticipated later in the day and could hinge on an assessment of his mental capacities by doctors in an Israeli hospital where he is in critical condition. A patient is seen in a hallway at the regional psycho-neurological hospital on the outskirts of Slovyanoserbsk, in a territory controlled by "Lugansk People's Republic" (LPR), eastern Ukraine, December 1, 2014. The Psycho-Neurological Hospital outside the village of Slovyanoserbsk is caught in the crossfire in separatist-held territory about 30 km (20 miles) northwest of the rebel stronghold of Luhansk and near the frontline. Medical workers say the head of the hospital was killed by a shell in Luhansk and about half the 180 staff have fled. There were 400 patients when fighting began, they say.
