PREDICTED PATH OF MERCURY ACROSS SOLAR DISK.
The planet Mercury will pass between Earth and the sun on May 7, 2003
in a rare astronomic event that occurs only a dozen times in a century.
Observers in Asia, Africa and Europe will have the best view, but those
in North America will only see the last 20 or 30 minutes of Mercury's
five-hour-long trip across the sun, known to astronomers as a transit.
The transit will already be in progress as the sun rises over the U.S.
East Coast around 6 A.M. EDT (1100 GMT). Image shows the predicted path
of Mercury across the solar disk during the 2003 transit, as seen from
SOHO's vantage point. REUTERS/Handout/NASA

A worker from the Karabash copper smelter in Russia's Urals walks home
along a railway line. The century-old smelter towering over Karabash
has covered soil around the town in highly-toxic mercury and lead,
killing off trees, grass and local crops. Most of the town's children
suffer from asthma, skin diseases and severe lead poisoning, local
health officials say. Ecologists have named the town of 16,000 as one
of the most heavily polluted places on the planet. Picture taken March

A man walks past an abandoned mine in the town of Karabash in Russia's
Urals. The sign exhorts the town's 16,000-strong population to "Work
and be victorious in the name of Lenin". Karabash, named by ecologists
as one of the most heavily polluted places on the planet, is home to a
copper smelter which chokes the town with thousands of cubic tonnes of
waste. The plant was closed in 1987 over ecological concerns but
reopened in 1998. Heaps of slag and soil thick with lead and mercury
have replaced the traditional forest-covered plains of the Urals in
Karabash, named an ecological disaster area by the Russian government.

NASA CASSINI SPACECRAFT IMAGE OF PLANET JUPITER AND MOON GANYMEDE.
The solar system's largest moon, Ganymede, is captured here alongside the planet Jupiter in this picture taken by NASA's Cassini spacecraft on December 3, 2000. Ganymede is larger than the planets Mercury and Pluto and Saturn's largest moon, Titan. Both Ganymede and Titan have greater surface area than the entire Eurasian continent on our planet. Cassini was 26.5 million kilometers (16.5 million miles) from Ganymede when this image was taken. The smallest visible features are about 160 kilometers (about 100 miles) across.

FILE PHOTO OF PLANET MERCURY.
File photo showing the planet Mercury is seen from Mariner 10's first image of Mercury acquired on March 24, 1974. A satellite that heads off to Mercury, the hottest planet in the solar system, on August 2, 2004 has NASA scientists buzzing because it is expected to journey there and find, of all things, ice. The MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging) spacecraft takes off three decades after the last time NASA took an up-close look at Mercury, where the temperature at noon is just a shade under 900 degrees F. The $427-million mission starts with lift-off aboard a Boeing Delta 2 rocket scheduled for 2:16 a.m. EDT on Monday from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, the space agency said.
