Ostrich farmer Diane Swaisland, inspects her flock of young ostriches on her property west of Sydney. For the first time, one hundred years after the ostrich was first imported live to Australia for the millinery trade, the ostrich industry is preening itself to break into the Asian market with ostrich sashimi, ostrich stir fry and plain ostrich steak. Through intensive breeding programmes the number of birds has increased to 60,000 birds from 45,000 within a year. Photo taken 13 AUG 96.
