Five-year-old Moises Echeverria tries to gets his father's attention while he watches an excavator demolish their home at the Puerta de Hierro neighborhood outside Madrid February 15, 2012. Some Spanish gypsy families settled in the area of Puerta de Hierro, near the Palace of Moncloa, in the 1960s and have built brick houses and raised their children and grandchildren there ever since. The settlers are registered with the town hall and have access to public services, but for the past two years have been subject to several evictions under Madrid's town planning board orders, on the grounds that the dwellings are illegal. Members of some families, mostly the eldest, have been relocated to public housing flats in the city, but often their children and grandchildren have been denied the same right to relocation, resulting in many families refusing to go to the rental flats assigned to them because they do not want to leave their children and grandchildren homeless. Out of more than 50 homes that used to stand in the neighbourhood, there are only six left now, as well as the debris of the ones already demolished. A child walks inside the Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida, Brazil's national saint, in the city of Aparecida, 165 km (103 miles) east of Sao Paulo October 11, 2011. The Basilica is Latin America's most popular shrine and one of the world's largest cathedrals. The shrine dates back to 1717, when three fishermen having a run of bad luck cast their nets in the Paraiba River and dragged up a headless statue of the Virgin Mary, venerated as Our Lady of Aparecida and named Brazil's national saint in 1930. Every year millions of Brazilian and foreign pilgrims visit the shrine and about 100,000 people usually attend services in Aparecida commemorating her every October 12. A man jokes with Ryan, 6, in front of graffiti painted by artists working with OPNI, an organization that uses graffiti to improve life in the slums, in the Vila Flavia favela of Sao Paulo August 26, 2011. OPNI, a Portuguese acronym which means "Unidentified Graffiti Artists", was formed in 1997 by some 20 youths in Sao Paulo's marginal slums with the goal of transforming the streets into an open-air gallery where the community can express its gripes and denounce social injustices. With only three of the original founding members left after most were either arrested, abandoned the activity to do something else or died from drug abuse, OPNI offers workshops in art, capoeira dance and graffiti to the community. Their current project is called "Favela Graffitada" and the organization has extended invitations to national and international artists to create over 100 graffiti works throughout the favela.
