A BONFIRE BURNS IN BULGARI FOR TRADITIONAL FIRE DANCING.
Logs burn before the beginning of fire dances in the village of Bulgari,
some 500 km south-east from the capital Sofia on June 3, 2003. Historians
say that fire dancing, in which performers dance barefoot on smouldering
embers, is associated with the cult of the sun and its analogue on earth,
the fire. The ritual begins in the morning, when dancers form a procession,
carrying icons and praying for health, prosperity and rich harvest. The fire
is being lit in the afternoon by the main fire dancer, called nestinar. The
dancing itself is performed after sunset to the accompaniment of a drum and

Afghanistan on Tuesday destroyed 922 kgs (2033 lbs) of opium and 971 kgs
(2141 lbs) of hashish (cannabis resin) which were seized in Kabul on their
way from Afghanistan's eastern province of Ningarhar. Afghanistan is one of

Heavy snow falls as a Bosnian Muslim man walking in the central Bosnian
village of Ahmici after watching live TV coverage from the U.N war crimes
tribunal February 26, 2001. Muslim survivors of the 1993 massacre in the
village of Ahmici voiced disappointment with sentences handed down by the
U.N war crimes court to two Bosnian Croats, saying they deserved maximum
sentences. Dario Kordic, the first senior politician to be convicted by U.N.
war crimes court for former Yugoslavia, once vice-president of the
self-proclaimed Bosnian Croat state, was found guility of persecuting,
killing and detaining Muslims in central Bosnia from late 1991 to 1994 and
sentenced to 25 years in jail. Mario Cerkez, who was accused of command
responsibility for the notorious Ahmici massacre, in which Bosnian Croats
murdered more than 100 people before torching their homes, received 15 years
