POPE JOHN PAUL II PRESIDES MASS AT FATIMA NEXT TO SISTER LUCIA AND BISHOP XIMENES BELO.
Pope John Paul II holds up a monstrance containing the consecrated Host at the end of a mass at the holy shrine of Fatima May 13. Behind the Pope is Sister Lucia dos Santos, the lone survivor of the three shepherd children believed to have had visions of the Madonna in 1917, and at left is Carlos Ximenes Belo, bishop of Dili and Nobel peace laureate. The Vatican said that the so-called third secret of Fatima was related to the failed 1981 assassination attempt against Pope John Paul and that the entire secret would be made public after "appropriate" preparation for the faithful.
