A monstrance, (an open or transparent receptacle in which the consecrated Host is exposed for veneration), by Eugenio Bellosio from 1889 is one of the eyecatchers of the exhibition 'Papal Splendour treasures of the Vatican' in Utrecht, the Netherlands September 9, 2003. [From September 11 through November 30] some 100 treasures from the Vatican will be on display at the Museum.

Pope John Paul II looks at a gold and silver monstrance with a consecrated host which Catholics believe is the body of Christ June 22, at the start of a Corpus Domini (Body of the Lord) day procession attened by tens of thousands of people. The traditonal procession takes worshippers from the Basilica of St John in Lateran to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, two of Rome's main churches.

Behind the Pope is Sister Lucia dos Santos, the lone survivor of the three shepherd children believed to have had visions of the Madonna in 1917, and at left is Carlos Ximenes Belo, bishop of Dili and Nobel peace laureate. The Vatican said that the so-called third secret of Fatima was related to the failed 1981 assassination attempt against Pope John Paul and that the entire secret would be made public after "appropriate" preparation for the faithful.
