BRAZILIAN FISHES FOR MULLET NEAR POLLUTED VALLEY OF DEATH AT CUBATAO.
A Brazilian man fishes for mullet along the shore of the polluted Cubatao river, an industrial city located 40 miles (60 km) from Sao Paulo. Cubatao, Brazil's chemical capital, has come a long way from its darkest, dirtiest days when it was known as the "Valley of Death" and the most polluted place on Earth. Although Cubatao's chimneys still belch smoke and flames into the air 24 hours a day and a stale industrial odor lingers in the air, government officials and industrialists now hold Cubatao up as a model of environmental recovery.
