Members of "El Sistema" play harps, as part of their "New Members" program, inside the childbirth unit of a public maternity hospital in Caracas October 1, 2014. In a nation awash with guns and with one of the world's highest murder rates, Venezuela's hugely successful classical music program, known as "El Sistema" (The System), has for decades sought to counteract poor children's exposure to violence with the gentle and inspiring influence of classical music. It used to only admit children aged at least 5. But under its latest "New Members" projects, hundreds of smaller infants can receive voice lessons, musical initiation with paper-made instruments, and free concerts, at its base in Caracas. Director Michael Rossato-Bennett poses for a portrait while promoting the documentary "Alive Inside" in Los Angeles, California July 29, 2014. Rossato-Bennett was flabbergasted when he entered a nursing home on a commission to film a few clips for a website. That visit, though, eventually sparked "Alive Inside," an award-winning independent documentary on musical therapy for those suffering from Alzheimer's disease and other neurological ailments. The documentary chronicles New York social worker Dan Cohen's effort to bring such therapy to dementia patients as a way to lessen the use of medication and combat its cost on a strained healthcare system about to absorb aging Baby Boomers. La Aung plays the guitar inside a bamboo cell called the "Special Prayer Room", where he is locked in for his first week at the Youth for Christ Centre for heroin addicts, near Naung Chein in Myanmar's Kachin state July 5, 2013. Myanmar is the world's second-largest producer of opium after Afghanistan and use of its derivative, heroin, is widespread. The centre's popularity is a testament both to the severity of Myanmar's drug problem and the lack of options for users in a poor country where modern treatment programmes are rare. It offers a 40-day "course" of prayer, Bible study and devotional singing, with football and weightlifting for those strong enough. Detox begins in the Special Prayer Room, as the bamboo cell is called. New arrivals are locked in around the clock for seven to ten days. Picture taken July 5, 2013.
