Honeybee gathers nectar from a flower at farm in the western Austrian village of Seefeld
A honeybee gathers nectar from a flower at a farm in the western Austrian village of Seefeld May 14, 2013. The European Union's food safety regulator has added a BASF insecticide to the list of crop chemicals it suspects of playing a role in declining bee populations. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) said in a statement May 27, 2013, that BASF's fipronil poses an "acute risk to honeybees when used as a seed treatment for maize", citing dust drift in particular.
The EU last month moved to ban three of the world's most widely used pesticides for two years because of fears that they are linked to a plunge in the population of bees critical to the production of crops. Picture taken May 14. REUTERS/ Dominic Ebenbichler (AUSTRIA - Tags: ANIMALS AGRICULTURE)

Bees are pictured on a bee hive in Vienna, July 11, 2012. A growing number of urban beekeepers' associations, such as Vienna's Stadtimker, are trying to encourage bees to make their homes in cities, as pesticides and crop monocultures make the countryside increasingly hostile. Bee populations are in sharp decline around the world, under attack from a poorly understood phenomonenon known as colony collapse disorder, whose main causes are believed to include a virus spread by mites that feed on haemolymph - bees' "blood". Being kept intact for eight generations by the Vercel family in a vaulted underground cellar in Arbois, the capital of Jura wines in France, this 'Burgundy-style' bottle with a long neck and rounded belly, contains 87 centilitres. Made to last centuries when of good quality, and nicknamed 'the wine of kings and the king of wines' this 238 years old bottle of Vin Jaune is estimated to reach 40,000 to 50,000 Swiss Francs (USD 43,800 to 54,800) when it comes to auction May 15. Michael Ganne, head of Wine at Christie's auction house, holds a bottle of Vin Jaune produced in 1774 during a preview in Geneva May 4, 2012. Being kept intact for eight generations by the Vercel family in a vaulted underground cellar in Arbois, the capital of Jura wines in France, this 'Burgundy-style' bottle with a long neck and rounded belly, contains 87 centilitres. A bottle from the same batch tasted by professionals in 1994 was declared as 'excellent', the golden-amber coloured nectar unveiled flavours of nuts, spices, curry, cinnamon, vanilla and dried fruits. A bee is seen sitting on a Marigold flower in a field of a private plantation near the village of Pishchalovo, about 220 km (138 miles) east of Minsk in this July 18, 2011 file photogaph. Scientists have discovered ways in which even low doses of widely used pesticides can harm bumblebees and honeybees, interfering with their homing abilities and making them lose their way. A bee flies to a Marigold flower at a field of a private plantation near the village of Pishchalovo, about 220 km (138 miles) east of Minsk, July 18, 2011. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, in power since 1994 and once referred to by Washington as "Europe's last dictator," must find $3 billion by year's end to prop up his heavily indebted economy. The financial crisis in Belarus didn't seriously affect this plantation because imported products are practically not used in this plantation, according to the director.
