Vapor rights activists exhale vapor from their e-cigarette before attending a city council meeting that will address the legality of indoor use of the devices in New York December 19, 2013. The New York City Council on Thursday will vote on a bill that would add electronic cigarettes to the city's strict smoking ban. E-cigarettes are slim, reusable metal tubes that contain nicotine-laced liquid in a variety of exotic flavors such as bubble gum and bacon. As a "smoker" puffs on the device, the nicotine is heated and releases a vapor that, unlike cigarette smoke, contains no tar, which is known to cause cancer and other diseases. At the Henley Vaporium, one of a growing number of e-cigarette lounges sprouting up in New York and other U.S. cities, patrons can indulge in their choice of more than 90 flavors of nicotine-infused vapor, ranging from bacon to bubble gum. The growing popularity of e-cigarettes has not escaped the notice of the industry's critics, who have stepped up calls for new regulations, including bans on their use in public places, even though the scientific evidence about exposure to their vapors remains inconclusive. The European Parliament voted on Tuesday to water down proposed tobacco legislation, rejecting an immediate ban on menthol cigarettes and scaling down the size of health warnings on packets following intense lobbying by tobacco companies. The parliament also said manufacturers should be free to sell smokeless e-cigarettes, which deliver nicotine electronically and are a rapidly growing market, as a consumer product when not being marketed as an aide to help people quit smoking. Gabor Kovacs of 'smoke no smoke' displays e-cigarette flavour attachments that his shop sells in Camden in London June 9, 2013. Puffing on slim metal tubes loaded with pale yellow liquid, two London businessmen say they have between their lips a cure for what the U.N. calls "one of the biggest public health threats the world has ever faced". Electronic cigarettes are the future, they argue. Cheaper, cleaner and cooler than smoking, "vaping" - using a vaporiser to inhale nicotine infused with exotic flavours ranging from pina colada to bubblegum - will spell the end of tobacco. A worker sorts cigars at the H. Upmann factory in Havana on March 1, 2013. Sales of Cuban cigars increased by $15 million dollars last year, hitting a total of $416 million, according to Cuba's state-run tobacco company, Habanos SA. That figure doesn't include any sales in the world's largest cigar market, the U.S., where it is still illegal to sell Cuban cigars. Picture taken March 1, 2013.
