51-year-old mother of 11, holds a dish with bread, her main food for
the last two years, inside her house at Khabibulayevo farm some 60 kms
north of Nukus, in eastern Uzbekistan's vast and poverty-stricken
Karakalpakstan region. On a recent visit to a Red Cross food
distribution point 50 kms from Nukus, crowds of people had walked over
10 kms from the collective farm which cannot feed them to collect huge
sacks full of cooking oil, rice, flour and salt. Picture taken March

FOR RELEASE WITH FEATURE BC-UZBEKISTAN HUNGER - Two babies a few months
old fight for life in a hospital at Khabibulayevo farm some 60 kms
north of Nukus, in eastern Uzbekistan's vast and poverty-stricken
Karakalpakstan region. The babies are among thousands of victims of an
agricultural policy, fashioned by the Soviet Union and pursued
enthusiastically by independent Uzbekistan, which is creating a desert,
destroying the Aral Sea, poisoning land, and cutting harvests. Picture

Five classrooms, the canteen and a new library were destroyed in the fire, with police investigating the suspicious fire after a burnt desk and bottle of kerosine were found by students in the building last week. Fiji's Indian community has been targeted in recent violence following the recent coup that was led by failed businessman George Speight. Speight is presently being held by authorities on Nuku Lau Island, located around five kilometres out to sea from the capital city of Suva.
