OPPOSITION LEADER SAM RAINSY AND SUPPORTERS MARCH TO PROTEST RECENT
ELECTION.
Opposition leader Sam Rainsy talks to over 400 supporters of his party
as they march through Phnom Penh February 23, 2002 to protest a refusal
by authorities to recount votes in several areas following the
country's landmark local elections earlier this month. Sam Rainsy,
leader of his self-named party, demanded the National Election
Committee recount votes declared null and void in six of the 1,621
communes - or clusters of villages - polled on election day, and hold a
re-vote in a seventh. Sam Rainsy maintains that recounting spoiled
ballot papers would lead to his party's victory in the six contested
areas. Official election results are due out before next Friday,
officials said. REUTERS/Chor Sokunthea
