"I was bullied at school by teachers and classmates because I look very big for my age. I was bullied from kindergarten to primary school. I used to feel very sad, frustrated and angry, at some point I didn't want to go to school anymore," said Saith. Food that contains approximately 5,850 calories that Carlos, 17, used to consume in one day before taking part in a weight loss program, is displayed for a photograph at his home in Mexico City, Mexico, April 6, 2021. Weighing 137 kilos aged 16, more than twice the recommended weight, Carlos tested positive for COVID-19 in January and spent a month in hospital, much of that in pediatric intensive care. Carlos said he started overeating when pressure intensified at school. Attempts to change his eating habits repeatedly failed. "I woke up and realized that if I don't make a change, I'll always be like this: I'll never mature; always have this body," he said. "Sometimes my body wants something sugary, but I say no." The Wider Image: Temptation everywhere: Mexican children struggle with obesity
Food that contains approximately 6,600 calories that Daniela typically consumes in one day as she tries to lose weight while taking part in a weight loss program, is displayed for a photograph at her family home in Texcoco, Mexico, January 8, 2021. Daniela was 11 years old when a doctor told her she would not live more than another six or seven years. Weighing 75 kilos (165 lb), about twice the recommended weight for her age, she had just suffered a minor heart attack. That was two years ago. She still remembers the pain in her chest. Then she was also diagnosed with diabetes. Daniela knows the disease well: she watched eight family members die from its complications. "The doctor told me that I'll die, that I'll not even turn 18 years old," she said. Now Daniela is 14 years old and weighs 81 kilos. Reuters was unable to contact the doctor, who treated Daniela at a different facility previously, but her current caseworker confirmed Daniela's account. "Instead of losing weight, I put on more," Daniela added. Nutritionist Betzabe Salgado, who works at Hospital Infantil de Mexico Federico Gomez, where Daniela is undergoing a weight loss program, calculated the calorie amount. A worker carries a pizza for delivery as he exits a Domino's pizza store in Sydney, Australia, August 12, 2015. Fast food may be falling out of favour in many countries around the world but companies are making healthy profits and boldly innovating in the unlikely market of Australia. Contrary to stereotypes of a beach-going community of fitness fanatics, official data out this week showed 40 percent of Australian adults are dangerously obese and have a poor diet that includes lashings of fast food. That makes Australia a hotbed for innovation by companies including homegrown firm Domino's Pizza Enterprises Ltd, McDonald's Corp and Yum! Brands Inc's, KFC and Pizza Hut as they struggle to win over health-conscious diners in other countries. Picture taken August 12, 2015. REUTERS/David Gray
