A jet plane takes off from Washington's Reagan National Airport past the moon in the night sky over Alexandria, Virginia late July 30, 2004. A full moon will appear for the second time this month on Saturday, a cosmic phenomenon termed "blue moon." According to planetarium specialists, a "blue moon" takes place about once every two-and-a-half years. The last time a full moon appeared twice during the same month was in November of 2001.

Venus transits across the sun as seen over Hong Kong June 8, 2004. The transit of Venus, when the planet drifts across the face of the Sun [as it travels between the Sun and the Earth, is so rare that no living being has ever witnessed the celestial event. Five transits of Venus have been recorded -- the last occured in 1882.]

Resembling a diamond-encrusted bracelet, a ring of brilliant blue star clusters wraps around the yellowish nucleus of what was once a normal spiral galaxy in this new image released on April 22, 2004 from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope (HST). [This image is being released to commemorate the 14th anniversary of Hubble's launch on April 24, 1990 and its deployment from the space shuttle Discovery on April 25, 1990. The sparkling blue ring is 150,000 light-years in diameter, making it larger than our entire home galaxy, the Milky Way. The galaxy, cataloged as AM 0644-741, is a member of the class of so-called "ring galaxies." It lies 300 million light-years away in the direction of the southern constellation Dorado.]

An image shown by NASA officials in Washington, March 2, 2004, shows a rocky outcrop they say shows shows evidence that water once existed on Mars, in a picture taken by the Opportunity Rover explorer. NASA officials have concluded that the part of Mars that NASA's Opportunity Rover is exploring was soaking wet in the past.

The Hubble Space Telescope has snapped a new image of the "Black Eye" galaxy, so named because an ancient cosmic smashup produced a dark ring and a roiling, conflicted interior. What looks like a black eye in the Hubble picture is actually a dark band of dust that stands out vividly in front of the galaxy's bright nucleus, Hubble scientists said in a statement February 5, 2004. The galaxy is officially known as M64, but astronomers have nicknamed it the "Black Eye" or "Evil Eye" galaxy.

This image, released January 16, 2004, taken by the front hazard-identification camera on the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit, shows a clear view of the Martian surface in front of the rover before the rover deployed its robotic arm, or instrument deployment device. The arm was deployed from its stowed position beneath the "front porch" of the rover body early Friday morning. This is the first use of the arm to deploy the microscopic imager, one of four geological instruments located on the arm. The instrument will help scientists analyze and understand martian rocks and soils by taking very high resolution, close-up images. ??? USE ONLY

This image, taken by Spirit's rear hazard-identification camera just after the rover drove approximately one meter (3 feet) northwest off the Columbia Memorial Station, shows the lander platform on Mars early January 15, 2004. That the wheel tracks are shallow indicates the soil has plenty of strength to support the moving rover. The well-defined track characteristics suggest the presence of very fine particles in the Martian soil (along with larger particles). Scientists also think the soil may have some cohesive properties. This image mosaic taken by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit's panoramic camera shows a new slice of martian real estate southwest of the rover's landing site. The landscape shows little variation in local topography, though a narrow peak only seven to eight kilometres away is visible on the horizon. A circular depression, similar to the one dubbed Sleepy Hollow, can be seen in the foreground. Compared to the Viking and Pathfinder landing sites, the terrain at Gusev Crater, Spirit's landing site, is flat and speckled with a sparse array of rocks. The picture was released by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California Janaury 10, 2004.
