- COMBO PHOTO - Combination picture shows the annular eclipse as observed in Arguzelo near the northern Portugese city of Braganca October 3, 2005. An annular eclipse differs from a total eclipse in that the moon appears too small to completely cover the sun. As a result, the moon is surrounded by an intensely brilliant ring or annulus formed by the outer perimeter of the sun's disk.

The Hubble Space Telescope has snapped a new image of the "Black Eye" galaxy, so named because an ancient cosmic smashup produced a dark ring and a roiling, conflicted interior. What looks like a black eye in the Hubble picture is actually a dark band of dust that stands out vividly in front of the galaxy's bright nucleus, Hubble scientists said in a statement February 5, 2004. The galaxy is officially known as M64, but astronomers have nicknamed it the "Black Eye" or "Evil Eye" galaxy.

This photograph of the coil-shaped Helix Nebula is one of the largest and most detailed celestial images ever made. The composite picture is a seamless blend of ultra-sharp images from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope combined with the wide view of the Mosaic Camera on the National Science Foundation's 0.9-meter telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, Arizona. The image shows a fine web of filamentary "bicycle-spoke" features embedded in the colorful red and blue ring of gas. At 650 light-years away, the Helix is one of the nearest planetary nebulae to Earth. A planetary nebula is the glowing gas around a dying, Sun-like star. Like a blooming rose, a nearby nebula glows pink and white in an image made on May 17, 2000 and released on September 12, 2002 by scientists using the Hubble Space Telescope. The nebula N11A looks flower like because of the glow from radiation of massive stars at its heart, the European Space agency said in a statement. [NASA's twin Voyager spaceships, celebrate their 25th year August 20, 2002 by speeding toward the edge of our solar system carrying messages from Mozart, Bach, and Chuck Berry. Voyager 1 was launched August 20, 1977 and was expected to take a quick four-year tour of Jupiter and Saturn, send back some data, and retire. Voyager 2 was launched September 5, 1977, with a similar mission, but a different route. Instead, the doughty robotic probes have kept going and going and going.] This is an image montage of the Saturnian system taken by the Voyager probe spacecraft.

- An undated rendition - by a NASA artist shows the Comet Nucleus Tour, or Contour, spacecraft near a comet with a distant comet in background. NASA announced August 15, 2002 that it lost contact with the $158 million spacecraft when the robotic probe was to have left Earth orbit on a journey to explore several comets.

Stars outnumber Perseid meteors lighting up the night sky of the al-Azraq desert, 70 km (45 miles) east of Amman, in the early hours of August 13, 2002, at the height of a meteor storm that was clearly visible to the naked eye in several parts of Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Meteors are the debris left in the wake of a passing comet infiltrating the Earth's atmosphere. The Perseid meteor shower is sparked every August when Earth passes through a stream of space grit left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle.

The Hubble Space Telescope has captured the rainbow-hued "fireworks" of an old supernova whose dying light first reached Earth some 320 years ago, scientists said on July 3, 2002. [The new image shows red, white, blue, pink and green gas streamers issuing from Cassiopeia A, the remnants of a massive star in the constellation Cassiopeia, named after an Ethiopian queen. The colors highlight parts of the debris where chemical elements are glowing. The dark blue fragments, for example, are richest in oxygen, the red material is rich in sulfur.]
