CREPURIZAO, Brazil
The Wider Image: Brazilians toil for gold in illegal Amazon mines
Informal mining in Brazil is seen by many as a scourge polluting the Amazon rainforest, poisoning indigenous tribes and robbing the nation of its wealth. For others it is a way of life. Brazilian garimpos, or wildcat mines, are operated by small crews of men, often caked in red-brown mud and working with rudimentary pans, shovels and sluice boxes that have been used for centuries. More sophisticated operations use water cannons and boats sucking mud from the bottoms of rivers. Regardless of the method, searching for gold and other minerals like cassiterite and niobium is dirty, dangerous and often illegal. "Looking for gold is like playing in a casino," said a 48-year-old miner. Miners asked not to be named, saying they feared the police as much of their work is illegal. Garimpos are in the spotlight as Brazil debates opening an area known as Renca in the northern Amazon forest to mining, which has met with stiff resistance from environmentalists. Mines and Energy Minister Fernando Coelho Filho argues that licensed mining will be an improvement over the estimated 1,000 people currently mining in the reserve illegally. Crepurizao lies hundreds of miles south of Renca, but gives a window into life in the garimpos caught up in the debate. Living in makeshift homes of wood and plastic, miners in the area ship some 60 kilograms of gold per month, according to traders. That much pure gold is worth millions of dollars on the global market, but high costs and layers of traders in the local market leave most miners living on the brink of poverty. The Wider Image: Kashmir's stone-pelters face off against pellet guns
Security forces using shotguns to disperse crowds of stone-throwing young people in the Indian-ruled region of Himalayan Kashmir have killed more than 100 people, blinding hundreds and maiming thousands over the past year. The protests have unleashed a political crisis in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, governed for the first time by a regional party in coalition with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party, which draws support from India's Hindu majority. The clashes, sparked by the July 8, 2016 killing by security forces of separatist militant Burhan Wani, have recently spread to college campuses and schools. They are drawing a new generation into a decades-old struggle for 'azaadi', or independence, for India's only Muslim-majority region, which is also claimed by neighbouring Pakistan. The Wider Image: Beauty, money and feathers
As night-time approaches in Sanliurfa, southeastern Turkey, most of the alleyways of the city's old bazaar are emptying out of buyers and vendors, except for one. The bustle of daytime trading has died down, but on this little street, a stream of men carry cardboard boxes filled with pigeons to a cluster of three teahouses. Here, they sell the birds at Sanliurfa's famed auctions to a dedicated band of pigeon keepers and breeders, a pastime that has been thriving for hundreds of years across the region and over the nearby border into war-torn Syria. In a country where the minimum wage is about 1,400 Liras ($367) a month, enthusiasts regularly easily spend hundreds of dollars for one bird. "I once sold a pair of pigeons forÊ35,000 Turkish Lira," says auctioneer Imam Dildas. "This is a passion, a hobby you cannot quit. I've been known to sell the fridge and my wife's gold bracelets to pay for pigeons." REUTERS/Umit Bektas SEARCH "PIGEONS AUCTION" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. Mihail Kogalniceanu, Romania
2016: A Picture and its Story
A pilot looks up from a U.S. F-22 Raptor fighter as it prepares to refuel mid-air with a KC-135 refuelling plane during a flight to Britain from Mihail Kogalniceanu air base in Romania, April 25, 2016. Toby Melville: 'I hate flying, so when I was asked if I fancied a day trip from a US air force base in Britain to near the border with Crimea, to photograph a mid-air refuel of US fighter bomber planes, I did initially hesitate. I have been sick many a time on previous assignments; flying in military helicopters over Baghdad, in planes hugging mountains in Kosovo and on six-seater propeller planes bouncing up and down through electrical storms in the Chilean Andes mountains. But the chance to shoot from such a unique viewpoint soon overrode all my queasy qualms. A 3.30 alarm call marked the beginning of a 19-hour working day. Eight hours of the shift were spent mid air in the 50-year-old hulk of a noisy, rickety and dark behemoth of a fuel tanker plane. The USAF crew members gave me several opportunities to shoot the Raptor fighter jets performing their miraculous seeming manoeuvres during the day. The Raptors flew at hundreds of knots, just metres from us and with precision accuracy, the umbilical-like line would drop out of the bottom of our plane and lock onto a miniscule-looking aperture on the top of the F22's. This frame shows a pilot preparing to receive the fuel-line. With the bonus of an optically super window to shoot through, together with great visibility on the return leg to Britain from Romania, I was satisfied with the pictures. Thankfully on this trip I managed to keep my composure and during the debrief, still trying to hide wobbly legs, I didnÕt mention to any of the pilots or crew members that I once even puked on an escalator - thatÕs how bad my motion sickness is!' Hundreds of flies are seen at a garbage-filled flat in Tokyo March 20, 2015 where a body of 85 year-old man was left for over a month. In rapidly ageing Japan, more people are dying alone and unnoticed. Specialist clean-up crews are on hand to cleanse "lonely death" apartments once their passing is spotted, including placing incense and flowers. In March, the body of a man in his 80s was found on the floor of his apartment in Tokyo. He had been dead for a month. The family didn't visit and the only reason for the body's discovery was the slight smell that troubled the downstairs neighbour. In a country where around 5 million elderly people live alone, the number of decaying bodies found in empty homes is expected to soar. REUTERS/Toru Hanai

Father Jacques Clemens, 105, reads at a mass at St. Benoit church in Nalinnes
Father Jacques Clemens reads at a mass at St. Benoit church in Nalinnes August 15, 2014. Clemens, who celebrated his 105th birthday on July 11, may be the world's oldest living priest who still holds a regular service, the Belgian Catholic Church said. Clemens was born in The Hague, Netherlands in 1909 and later moved to Belgium where he was ordained a priest in 1936. Seventy-eight years later, he still holds a regular mass in his parish in the village of Nalinnes, in southern Belgium, in front of 80 faithful. "I used to make the service in a barn and in a cellar before the St. Benoit church was built in 1957," he said. When he was about to retire at the age of 75, the local bishop asked him to remain in service until they found a successor. Forty years later, Clemens is still in his job and nobody is there to succeed him. Clemens said he was happy to continue as long as his health permitted it. Waking up every day at 0530 and going to bed at 2100, Father Clemens believe he owes his long life to a strict routine. "I always eat at the same hour every day," he said. Everyday at 1100, Clemens drives his car for a few kilometres to the village of Gerpinnes to share a lunch with other members of the congregation. Picture taken August 15, 2014. Munna Kuvar, 105, lies on a bed as she is comforted by relatives at Mukti Bhavan (Salvation House) in Varanasi, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, June 17, 2014. The city of Varanasi, on the banks of the River Ganges, is widely considered Hinduism's holiest city and many Hindus believe that dying there and having their remains scattered in the Ganges allows their soul to escape a cycle of death and rebirth, attaining "moksha" or salvation. "Mukti Bhavan" or "Salvation House", is a charity-run hostel that caters for people who wish to come to Varanasi to die. Guests can normally stay up to two weeks after which, if they haven't yet passed away, they are gently asked to leave. Picture taken June 17, 2014. Tran Yaing Chang, 32, speaks with Reuters during an interview at her house in Phnom Penh March 11, 2014. Her brother, 30-year-old carpenter Tran Van Chien, was standing among onlookers on February 16 following a minor road accident when someone shouted "yuon," a term widely seen as derogatory to the hundreds of thousands of ethnic Vietnamese who call Cambodia home. Seconds later, the crowd turned on him and killed him. For centuries Cambodia was caught between more powerful Thai and Vietnamese kingdoms and for generations, many Cambodians have believed Vietnam wants to take over their land. At various times, Cambodian politicians have found it useful to play up that fear. Recently, the resurgent opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) has stoked anti-Vietnamese sentiment, seeking to capitalise on long-ruling Prime Minister Hun Sen's association with Vietnam. A woman puts money in a jukebox as a man sits below a television in a bar in the town of Lerwick on the Shetland Islands April 2, 2014. Twelve hours by ferry from the Scottish mainland, hundreds of miles from Edinburgh and closer to Oslo than London, the windswept Shetland islands have their own aspirations about Scottish independence. Some of the 23,000 inhabitants even want their own. Many Shetlanders see the Sept. 18 vote on whether Scotland should end the 307-year-old union with England as an opportunity to gain control over local services and a share of revenues from the oil pumped from the North Sea.
