Spotlight: Ivory Coast: Women at work
Ange Dede, a 29-year-old painter and decorator poses for a photograph in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, March 2, 2016. Women have long played a dominant role in agriculture in Ivory Coast and in the sprawling markets where most Ivorians purchase their daily necessities. Now some are breaking through into the most important positions in government, administration and business - positions long held by males in this traditional society. In 2012, Niale Kaba became finance minister, the first woman to hold the post in more than half a century as an independent nation. Ivorian women today work in a range of jobs – from gas-station attendant to plastic recycler and lawyer. International Women's Day is marked on March 8. Japanese craftsman Sumikazu Nakata writes the Chinese character of "victory", which is a part of the phrase "Certain victory", as he adds the final touches on a Daruma doll, which is believed to bring good luck, at his studio "Daimonya" in Takasaki, northwest of Tokyo November 23, 2014. Daruma dolls, representing the Indian priest Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism in China, is used to bring luck. It is also a favorite item of election candidates where they traditionally paint only one eye on the doll when they start their campaign and paint the other eye if they win in the election. The order call from candidates for the upcoming general election on December 14 started ringing after Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced the election on November 18, Nakata said.
