Pictures of the Year: A picture and its story
Adult-film actress Stephanie Clifford, also known as Stormy Daniels, puts her shoe back on after passing though a security screening, as she arrives at federal court in the Manhattan borough of New York City, New York, U.S., April 16, 2018. Reuters photographer Shannon Stapleton: "The day started out in a scrum of 50 photographers penned in a police barricade outside the federal courthouse in Manhattan, waiting for adult film star Stormy Daniels. This kind of assignment is hectic and intensely competitive. While you do have an approximate arrival time, you rarely know when the subject will show up or if they will be where you are set up. After some time, I decided to follow a video crew who seemed to be more in the know about Daniels' movements. Before we knew it, a big black sports utility car pulled over and Daniels emerged from it. It was total chaos as everyone scrambled to get a picture of her. I ran to a window and tried to place myself by the metal detector that anyone entering the courthouse has to go through. I pinned my camera upon the glass, hoping Daniels would pass by me. She was wearing pastel pink and I knew that if I kept the focus on her, I would be able to get a clean shot. As Daniels made her way through the metal detector, I noticed she had to take off her high-heel shoes and sit down to put them back on. I knew in that moment that was the money shot: Daniels with her leg held up as she put her heels back on." REUTERS/Shannon Stapleton SEARCH "POY STORY" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: Cycling in Jeddah: Saudi women embrace change
When Amirah al-Turkistani left Boston in 2015, after earning a graduate degree, friends mocked her decision to ship her beloved pistachio-coloured bicycle back home to Saudi Arabia. Riding in public was unthinkable at the time in the deeply conservative Muslim kingdom, where religious police patrolled public spaces to enforce modest dress, bans on music and alcohol, prayer-time store closures and the mixing of unrelated men and women. Fast forward three years and Amirah is riding regularly on the seaside corniche, alone or with her husband and children. On the bike, the 30-year-old wears an abaya, the loose-fitting, full-length robe symbolic of religious faith and still required public dress for Saudi women. But instead of traditional black, she chooses from a range of pastels she designed herself, trimmed with lace and sporting patches of bright colours. "Jeddah today isn't the same as Jeddah five, six years ago," she said. "The scrutiny on clothes (has eased), there's more places to go, working opportunities for women are the same as for men." Saudi Arabia, which for decades seemed irreparably stuck in the past, is now changing by the day. REUTERS/Reem Baeshen SEARCH "BAESHEN WOMEN" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. The Wider Image: Serbia's bungalow cemeteries
From a distance, the cemetery in the eastern Serbian village of Smoljinac looks like a residential neighbourhood eerily placed among graves. But once inside the grounds, after passing a section with the usual stone slabs, visitors find rows of small bungalows painted in pastel colours. They have one or two rooms, large windows and ornate plaques - some inside, some outside - memorialising the deceased. These are the burial chapels of Smoljinac, cosy cabins with a furnished room inside, a storage place for wreaths and funeral paraphernalia, and the family crypt below. Some even have electric power inside. REUTERS/Marko Djurica SEARCH "SERBIA GRAVES" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY. Matching text: SERBIA-GRAVES/

A delivery man works in front of One George Street in Singapore June 13, 2007. The latest focal point for hedge funds is Singapore's picturesque Chinatown, where pastel-coloured traditional shop houses, ornate Buddhist temples and Chinese clan houses are within walking distance from the city-state's financial district. While several smaller hedge funds rent space in between the restaurants and tea houses of Telok Ayer Street and Amoy Street, the centre of much of the hedge fund action is One George Street, a gleaming 23-storey office block.
