Tim Wiggins of NCR's Advanced Concepts Solutions Laboratory in Dundee, Scotland, uses his personal digital assistant (PDA) to demonstrate accessing money from a conceptual automated teller machine (ATM) at a demonstration in Sydney May 31, 2001. Codenamed "Freedom" but nicknamed "The Red Egg" because of its shape, Freedom is the world's first ATM that can be accessed by a handheld wireless device or mobile telephone. The money machine of the future has no keyboard, no screen and no card, instead users perform transactions on their mobile phones or handheld computers with the cash and receipt dispensed as normal.
