Peolpe inspect a used car for sale in Havana January 3, 2014. Cubans awoke on Friday with the right to buy new and used vehicles from the state without special permission for the first time in half a century, but mark ups of 400 percent or more quickly dashed most people’s expectations. At the state-run Peugeot dealership in Havana Friday morning, where prices ranged from $91,000 for a 2013 model 206 to $262,000 for a 508, people looked at prices and walked away shaking their heads in disgust. Iranian-made Peugeot 206 and Pars cars are displayed in front of a car shop in southern Tehran June 29, 2011. Unusually for the Middle East, Iran has developed its domestic car industry for five decades and produced 1.6 million vehicles last year, about half of them made by Iran Khodro which aims to export around 10 percent of its production this year. Khodro's main brand, the Samand, is a sedan based on the Peugeot 405 which retails, with ABS brakes and airbags, for just under 150 million rials (around $14,000). Khodro also produces Peugeot branded cars and a version of a Renault model under agreements with the French manufacturers, despite Paris's support for tighter U.N. and EU sanctions. Iranian made Peugeot 206 cars are seen on a production line of carmaker Iran Khodro, west of Tehran June 20, 2011. Unusually for the Middle East, Iran has developed its domestic car industry for five decades and produced 1.6 million vehicles last year, about half of them made by Iran Khodro which aims to export around 10 percent of its production this year. Even with sanctions, which have scared off some suppliers from exporting to Iran, and a limp economy, Iran Khodro says sales rose 18 percent in 2010 and plans a 13 percent output increase this year to 860,000 vehicles.
