The Wider Image: Parents of Nigeria's abducted girls cherish keepsakes
Kachalla Bukar's eyes filled with tears when he looked at a blue plastic basket containing his 14-year-old daughter's belongings. Aisha Kachalla is one of 110 girls abducted on Feb. 19 by suspected Boko Haram militants from her school in Dapchi, a dusty, remote town in the northeast Nigerian state of Yobe. The basket contains noodles, underwear, clothes and other items her parents packed to make her life at boarding school more comfortable - before it was interrupted by men shouting and brandishing weapons. Now those mundane items are the only connection he has to his daughter's recent life while he and other parents wait for news. "When we went to school on Tuesday she was not among the girls that have been found," he said, holding up a pink dress that was part of her school uniform. For the father-of-six, the box and its contents are keepsakes to be cherished but also a reminder of the moment he learned his second eldest daughter was missing. "Her colleagues who have returned then gave us our daughter's school box with her personal belongings. That was when we realized our daughter is actually missing," he said. The Dapchi abductions may be one of the largest since Boko Haram took more than 270 schoolgirls from the northeastern town of Chibok in 2014. That case sparked an online campaign and spurred several governments into action to try and find them. REUTERS/Afolabi Sotunde SEARCH "DAPCHI PARENTS" FOR THIS STORY. Bangkok, Thailand
The Wider Image: Transgender boxer fights for acceptance
Clad in a pink tank top and shorts, her face made up with rouge and red lipstick, transgender Muay Thai fighter Nong Rose Baan Charoensuk is a formidable opponent. Karun "Priewpak" Kaemlam, a male fighter, lost a thrilling five-round match to Rose, as she is generally known, earlier this month. "I wasn't able to fight her strength and big build," said Priewpak who suffered a gash above his right eye in the fight at Rajadamnern Stadium in the Thai capital. It was the second consecutive win for Rose in the revered Muay Thai arena after becoming the first transgender boxer to fight there last month. "Being a transgender doesn't mean that we're weak," Rose said after the fight. Born Somros Polchareon, Rose said she identified as a woman at an early age and began wearing makeup and a sports bra in the ring. In the rural towns where she has done most of her fighting, her appearance disconcerted some of her male opponents. "They would say they didn't want to fight with a gay person, as it would be embarrassing if they won or lost," she said. "I still face those insults, but I don't care about them." Thailand is widely seen as a paradise for gay and transgender people, but many say they are treated as second-class citizens. Transgender women figure on television, in beauty pageants and at hair salons and cosmetics counters, but they cannot change their gender designation on identity papers, despite a 2015 law against gender-based discrimination. Jason Gaswint keeps an eye on equipment readings from the Beef Products Inc (BPI) headquarters operations center in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota November 19, 2012. A year ago, Beef Products Inc. had four state-of-the art plants, more than 1,300 employees and was expanding aggressively. The meat company was the leading maker of "lean finely textured beef," a low-fat product made from chunks of beef, including trimmings, and exposed to tiny bursts of ammonium hydroxide to kill E. coli and other dangerous contaminants. Few Americans realized the product was a mainstay of fast-food burgers, school lunch tacos and homemade meatloaf. Today, the South Dakota company's revenues have plummeted from more than $650 million to about $130 million a year, and three of its plants are shuttered. Company officials blame the abrupt falloff on a series of ABC News broadcasts that began last March - stories that repeatedly called its product "pink slime." Photo taken November 19, 2012.
