Flora Mema, 34, sits near her pomegranate crops in Torovice, Lezhe district, northwest of the capital Tirana, December 16, 2014. Torovice served as an internment camp during the former communist regime, and now shelters families coming from the poor northeast region looking for a better life as they move from mountainous areas to more developed zones near urban areas. But these families live in almost dilapidated houses at a former internment camp that sheltered persons opposing the communist regime, and whose family members were taken there as punishment. Up to 100,000 Albanians were executed, imprisoned or sent to internment camps during the four-and-a-half decades of communist rule, which eventually toppled in December 1990 following a students' protest.
