Kenai Rivero who is two months old and has been diagnosed with malnutrition, is checked by a doctor during a special event for children with nutritional problems organised by Catholic relief agency Caritas, at a church in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, August 10, 2019. "I went to the paediatric hospital, and they gave me an appointment for a month later because the nutritionist was on leave." "I went to the nutrition institute, and they gave me an appointment for the Monday of the following week," said Francys when describing how she has been looking for help with her son. A Picture and Its Story: Yemen's face of malnutrition
The emaciated frame of 18-year-old Saida Ahmad Baghili lies on a hospital bed in the red sea port city of Hodaida, her suffering stark evidence of the malnutrition spread by Yemen's 19-month civil war. Baghili arrived at the Al Thawra hospital on Saturday. She is bed-ridden and unable to eat, surviving on a diet of juice, milk and tea, medical staff and a relative said. The 18-year-old is one of more than 14 million people, over half of Yemen's population, who are short of food, with much of the country on the brink of famine, according to the United Nations. Her picture is a reminder of the humanitarian crisis in the Arabian Peninsula's poorest country where at least 10,000 people have been killed in fighting between Saudi-led Arab coalition and the Iran-allied Houthi movement. Intensive care wards in Yemen's hospitals are filled with emaciated children hooked up to monitors and drips - victims of food shortages that could get even worse due to a reorganisation of the central bank that is worrying importers. With food ships finding it hard to get into Yemen's ports due to a virtual blockade by the Saudi-led coalition that has backed the government during an 18-month civil war, over half the country's 28 million people already do not have enough to eat, according to the United Nations.
