Chris Castles, co-director of the ARA Project, holds a newborn great green macaw at a nursery belonging to the organisation in Alajuela, 32 km (20 miles) from San Jose, March 27, 2012. The ARA Project is dedicated to the conservation and protection of two native macaw species of Costa Rica, the endangered great green macaw (ara ambiguus) and the scarlet macaw (ara macao). According to a study by the Research and Conservation Project Green Macaw, the two species are endangered due to deforestation.
