Until January, Jose Martinez and his wife Arelis Morales were in the eye of Venezuela's political storm: he worked for an opposition leader, she advised human rights groups. But after years of opposing President Nicolas Maduro's increasingly repressive leftist government - including 2017 protests that ended with 125 deaths - they decided to put family life first. "The main reason for leaving was that we want to have children," Martinez, 31, told Reuters, from the rural town of Xinzo de Limia in Spain's Galicia region where they left to live with relatives. Haidar, a transgender young man who's in his second year of Asian and African Studies at Madrid's Autonoma University and Coral, currently looking for a job, have been dating for seven years. "A friend of mine told me there was a girl who liked Dragon Ball's Vegeta character and wanted to become a boy. She put us in touch virtually and we spent the following year video calling each other before we were able to meet in person in Madrid," said Coral. "I wanted to kiss her so badly, but her friend's parents were with us and I refrained myself," said Haidar. "We had to wait a few more months before I was invited to his house and we kissed in his bedroom for the first time, but his family didn't approve of us at first and we spent the following five years seeing each other secretly during Japan Weekend fairs," said Coral. "It was very hard. There were times I thought it would be less painful if we broke up, but I couldn't. Together until death do us part," said Haidar. "We have gone through a lot of difficult times, but now we feel like we can face anything and anyone, no one can bring us down," said Coral. They are both Spanish history buffs and enjoy spending time together at the Moor's Field gardens beneath the Royal Palace. "This place is very meaningful to us because here we feel free," said Coral. The Wider Image: Iraq's Kerbala transformed for sacred Shi'ite ritual
Chanting and flailing themselves in mourning for Imam Hussein, hundreds of thousands of Shi'ite Muslims from around the world gather in the Iraqi city of Kerbala for one of the most sacred rituals in their religious calendar. Arbain marks the culmination of a 40-day mourning period for Imam Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Mohammed who was killed in a 7th century battle in Kerbala. Shi'ites believe his remains are entombed there. Exhausted pilgrims, including women carrying their children, marched long distances to reach the shrines. Many, arriving by air from Iran, Pakistan or Bahrain, had landed in Baghdad several days earlier. Kerbala, 80 km south of the capital, was cloaked in black because of the robes worn by pilgrims, and bedecked in a sea of flags. Groups of people build camps where they cook, share food with others, and display decorative objects. Banners featuring Imam HusseinÕs words are put up on walls and buildings. The ritual is a time for sorrow and self-reflection. Mourning Shi'ites listen to recollections of how Hussein and his family were killed. The theme of martyrdom dominates, as pilgrims gash their foreheads with swords and beat themselves with chains. Hussein's death is interpreted by Shi'ites as a symbol of the struggle against injustice and oppression. Tents have been set up in Kerbala to provide a resting place for pilgrims, where men serve them cups of free tea. Others offer free massages to those arriving on foot from different cities, while tailors work on religious flags at a market. REUTERS/Abdullah Dhiaa Al-deen SEARCH "IRAQ SHIITES" FOR THIS STORY. 2016: A Picture and its Story
ATTENTION EDITORS - VISUAL COVERAGE OF SCENES OF INJURY OR DEATH A body is seen on the ground in Nice, France July 15, 2016, after the Bastille Day truck attack on July 14. Eric Gaillard: 'I was at home, on holiday after a gruelling few weeks covering the Euro 2016 soccer championships, when a colleague called from Paris to say a truck had hit people in central Nice. I assumed it was a traffic accident - not something we would usually cover. But then I received an alert on my phone, the local authorities announcing there had been an attack. I didn't stop to wonder what it was, I grabbed my cameras and set out on my motorbike. I couldn't get through on my motorbike and, as I parked, I noticed there was a body lying on the curb. It was when I looked into my rearview mirror that I saw all the other bodies just behind me. Around a dozen bodies, some already covered with tablecloths taken from nearby restaurants, lay on the seaside promenade. Police and soldiers - many pointing their guns - were still in a state of confusion. The conditions were very difficult, it was dark, police trying to stop us work ... and some people there were aggressive. I understood. The situation was very chaotic. The doll photo went viral on the Internet, often mis-captioned by the site, saying it showed a dead child beneath the foil emergency blanket. But in fact nobody knows for sure the age of the victim. Given size of the victim, I don't think it was a child. I don't know why the doll is there. Was it a parent who was with a child - hence the doll? Did someone put the doll there at some point? Everyone has asked me. When you go to a war you know it's a hostile environment, you expect to see some unpleasant things but I was very shaken by what I saw that night because the horror had come home to my city, Nice. The attack happened just 500 meters from my home and during France's traditionally festive Bastille Day setting.' REUTERS/Eric Gaillard TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY SEARCH "2016 PIX" FO

A Picture and Its Story: In the aftermath of the Bastille Day attack
ATTENTION EDITORS - VISUAL COVERAGE OF SCENES OF INJURY OR DEATH - A child's doll lying in the street stares up into the night sky next to a dead body covered in a metallic blanket - an image that has come to symbolise the Bastille Day massacre when 84 people were killed by a truck ploughing into holidaying crowds. But Reuters photographer Eric Gaillard, who rushed out of his Nice apartment in the confusion and fear of Saturday night, had not even seen the doll when he set to work shooting pictures on the Promenade des Anglais, and like everyone there, still had no real idea of what had happened. The doll photo has gone viral on the internet, and often been captioned to say it shows a dead child beneath the foil emergency blanket, but in fact nobody knows for sure the age of the victim. "Given its size, I don't think it was a child. I don't know why the doll is there," Gaillard said. "Was it a parent who was with a child - hence the doll? Did someone put the doll there at some point, for some unknown reason? Everyone is asking me." REUTERS/Eric Gaillard SEARCH "GAILLARD BASTILLE" FOR THIS STORY. Nepalese grandfather Durga Kami brushes his bushy white beard, puts on his school uniform and, with the aid of his walking stick, trudges for over an hour to class for another day of learning. Poverty prevented Kami finishing his studies as a child and achieving his goal of becoming a teacher. Now 68, the father of six and grandfather of eight goes to school six days a week to complete his studies and escape a lonely home life following the death of his wife. Walking into the Shree Kala Bhairab higher secondary school and the buzz created by 200 children is a welcome contrast to the hush of the isolated one-room home. Kami said he wanted to keep studying until his death, adding he hoped it would encourage others to ignore age obstacles. "If they see an old person with white beard like me studying in school they might get motivated as well," he said. REUTERS/Navesh Chitrakar SEARCH "DURGA KAMI" FOR THIS STORY. Dolls hang out to dry at Jinhua Partytime Latex Art and Crafts Factory in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province, China, May 25, 2016. There's no masking the facts. One Chinese factory is expecting Donald Trump to beat his likely U.S. presidential rival Hilary Clinton in the popularity stakes. At the Jinhua Partytime Latex Art and Crafts Factory, a Halloween and party supply business that produces thousands of rubber and plastic masks of everyone from Osama Bin Laden to Spiderman, masks of Donald Trump and Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton faces are being churned out. Sales of the two expected presidential candidates are at about half a million each but the factory management believes Trump will eventually run out the winner. "Even though the sales are more or less the same, I think in 2016 this mask will completely sell out," said factory manager Jacky Chen, indicating a Trump mask.
