A chef prepares quince kibbeh, an Aleppine delicacy, at the Mirage hotel kitchen in Aleppo October 21, 2007. With silk road fame and cosmopolitan prosperity, today's Syrian city of Aleppo was the culinary capital of the Middle East before cultural and commercial decline took its toll. Syria is opening up its economy in the last few years after decades of nationalisation and state control and reviving interest in the city's cuisine. Picture taken October 21, 2007. Florida's Supreme Court gave a huge boost to Democrat Al Gore's chances of capturing the White House on December 8, 2000 effectively cutting Republican George W. Bush's lead in the state to just 154 votes and ordering a manual recount of ballots which machines failed to read. The ruling was supported by Justices Peggy Quince, Barbara Pariente, Harry Lee Anstead and Fred Lewis (top row). Justice Major Harding, Chief Justice Charles T. Wells and Leander Shaw (Bottom row), the court's three senior judges, opposed the ruling.
