Horse Racing: Barbaros Preakness Recovery
Sept 15, 2006; Kennett Square, PA, U.S.A; 2006 Kentucky Derby winner, Barbaro, looks around as he munches on some fresh grass as Dr. Dean Richardson, chief of surgery at the George D. Widener Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, holds on to him while hand grazing the Kentucky Derby winner at University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, PA, where the horse continues to recover from a broken right hind leg suffered in the Preakness on May 20, 2006. Barbaro is also recovering from severe laminitis in his left hind leg, a life threatening condition that developed following surgery to repair the right hind leg that was broken. Sept 15, 2006; Kennett Square, PA, U.S.A; Signs for 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro adorn the front gate of the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, PA, where the horse continues to recover from a broken right hind leg suffered in the Preakness on May 20, 2006. Barbaro is also recovering from severe laminitis in his left hind leg, a life threatening condition that developed following surgery to repair the broken right hind leg. The "grow hoof grow" sign refers to Barbaro's laminitis. Surgeon Dean Richardson had to remove a large portion of Barbaro's hoof wall on his left hind leg and, like a human nail, it has to grow back.
