Hazar Abbara hugs her neighbour Angeles Romero Fernandez (R) on a bed outside the apartment where Romero Fernandez and her family were evicted from two days ago in Madrid September 27, 2013. Rodriguez Romero lived with her husband, daughter and parents in a social rent flat of the Municipal Housing and Land Company (EMVS) in Madrid. With everyone out of job, the family fell behind with the payments resulting in debt. Despite paying off their debt, the EMVS told them to move out, Rodriguez Romero says. The family lives on benefits for the disabled (Rodriguez Romero's mother suffers from bipolar syndrome and her father has a degenerative disease) as well as Rodriguez Romero's father's pension. A worn-out Dolores Ferrer, 34, lies on a rug in the commons area of her apartment building after news that her eviction had been put off indefinitely in Madrid September 12, 2013. Ferrer, a victim of domestic violence, lives in a tiny flat owned by Madrid's Municipal Housing and Land Company (EMVS) that she occupied 17 years ago with the man who became her husband, father of her two children and her abuser and who is serving a jail sentence. Ferrer became unemployed two years ago and struggles to put food on the table. She tried to negotiate with the EMVS to pay a social low rent, but to no avail. Marcheline Rosero, 45, disabled from the effects of polio as a child in Ecuador, sits on her bed in her flat in Madrid December 17, 2012. She and her family escaped eviction from their small Madrid flat when she fell behind on mortgage payments two years ago, and lender Bankia repossessed it. The unemployed 45-year-old, confined to a wheelchair by childhood polio, reached an agreement to stay by paying the bank a nominal rent of 240 euros per month.
But under the existing law she still owes most of a 222,000 euro home loan even after handing the property - now valued at 60,000 euros - back to Bankia. "I've got a debt there that I haven't paid back that is accumulating interest," says the former office clerk, greeting her three children as they return from school. Picture taken December 17, 2012. Pensioners Pedro Romero (R), 70, and Juan Diego Cobo, 72, with a rope of chorizo sausages and a mock envelope with fake 100 Euro notes hanging from their necks stand during a demonstration called by Mortgage Victims' Platform (PAH) demanding "The right to decent housing, stop evictions, the retroactive payment in kind and social rents" in front of the Popular's Party headquarters in Malaga, southern Spain February 16, 2013. Spain's parliament agreed on Tuesday to debate reforms to tough mortgage laws, the focus of bitter protests in the country's economic crisis, after activists presented an petition with close to 1.5 million signatures. Public pressure on Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to change mortgage rules has mounted as banks have repossessed 400,000 properties - most of them residential - since 2008 when a construction bubble burst and the unemployment rate spiraled up to 26 percent. Similar demonstrations were planned to take place on Saturday in several cities across Spain, according to the Mortgage Victims' Platform. The sign (R) reads, "The government of P.P. A chain locks a fence outside a block of houses on the outskirts of Madrid December 7, 2012. Spain has left major questions unanswered in its rush to set up a "bad bank" to manage toxic loans built up by the country's lenders, creating a detail vacuum that is keeping potential investors at arm's length. It will open SAREB, which will ultimately house around 60 billion euros ($78 billion) of rotten real estate loans, properties and deserted tracts of development land built up by Spain's ailing lenders, by the end of the year, but many of the details on how the assets will be managed and sold are still being hammered out. Castano, a Spanish national who came from his native Colombia to Spain in 2000, stopped making mortgage payments after becoming unemployed in late 2009. Spain announced a detailed timetable for economic reforms and a tough 2013 budget based primarily on spending cuts on Thursday in what many see as an effort to pre-empt the likely terms of any international bailout. A quarter of all Spanish workers are unemployed and tens of thousands have been evicted from their homes since a housing bubble burst in 2008 and plummeting consumer and business sentiment tipped the country into a four-year economic slump.
