Patrick Manyika, 33, of Rwanda poses for a portrait outside the University of Redlands where he will starting his second master's degree in Geographic Information Systems, in Redlands, California May 28, 2014. Manyika was born in a Ugandan refugee camp after his Tutsi family fled Rwanda. In 1983, unrest forced them back to Rwanda, where they lived first in a national park, then in the capital. Manyika survived the Rwandan genocide of 1994, in which 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed, by sheltering in a UN-controlled soccer stadium. After doing charity work and teaching himself various languages, in 2009 he had the opportunity to leave Rwanda and pursue his education in the United States. He is now about to start his second Masters degree. June 20 is World Refugee Day, an occasion that draws attention to those who have been displaced around the globe. In the run-up to the date, Reuters photographers in different regions have photographed various people who have at some point fled their homes. Picture taken May 28, 2014. Alphonsine Mukamfizi, 42, who miraculously survived three attempts on her life and had to fake death in order to survive, with a deep cut on one side of her face, looks on at her home in Nyamata, a small town outside of Rwandan capital Kigali April 4, 2014. The rest of her 11 family members were all killed on those occasions during mass killings in the 1994 genocide. The three-month killing spree in 1994 by Hutu extremists targeted ethnic Tutsis, but moderate Hutus were also caught in the wave of violence that followed the fatal downing of a plane carrying Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana. The massacre killed 800,000 people. REUTERS/Noor Khamis (RWANDA - Tags: ANNIVERSARY CIVIL UNREST POLITICS SOCIETY)
